To clean my glasses in the dishwasher after they fell into the toilet?

My baby has made my glasses really loose by repeatedly grabbing at them, as a result they fell off my face and straight into the toilet bowl when I went to flush.

I don’t want to put them back on my face until I’m sure they’re properly clean, and I think the best way to do that might be to put them in the dishwasher. Which I know is a bit contradictory because you’d think that if I’m happy to put them in the dishwasher which also cleans plates that I eat off then I can’t be that worried about the yuck. But I am.

Ive seen a thread on here before about washing toilet brushes in the dishwasher which made me feel sick, but I’d only done a wee and toilet was cleaned yesterday so I think this different. Again probably contradictory of me!

AIBU to consider putting them in the dishwasher? Any better suggestions? Maybe just boiling water over them, but I’m worried that might damage them. Then again, so might the dishwasher. Argh.

The frame is made of metal and plastic.

I think of they're on the very top bit it should be ok, but if it was just a wee surely a quick rinse under the tap would be ok.

PestyMachtubernahme · 18/06/2019 13:53

Don't destroy your glasses, they are expensive.

Just wash them with warm soapy water (by hand) and rinse well.

BollocksToBrexit · 18/06/2019 13:53

The plastic will melt and twist. They use heat in the opticians to shape them.

bonzo77 · 18/06/2019 13:55

I’d be more worried that the dishwasher will wreck any special coating on them. Or ruin them in some other unexpected way. Just rinse them and wipe with some antibacterial spray or alcohol or bleach.

EmmaC78 · 18/06/2019 13:55

I think i would just wash them in the sink tbh. Maybe my standards are too low though.

Passthecherrycoke · 18/06/2019 13:55

I think you’ll ruin them too. I would use warm soapy water but you could also cold water sterilise them?

VenusOfWillendorf · 18/06/2019 13:55

I'm not sure about putting them in the dishwasher, in case the lens would get scratched. If you have a baby - do you have Milton Sterilizing Fluid? I think something like that would ideal.

Oysterbabe · 18/06/2019 13:55

Do you have any sterilising fluid that you use for baby bottles? You could put them in that for a while.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 18/06/2019 13:56

I've done this... it melted the plastic and the metal went funny and out of position. It also ruined the coating.

I wouldn't!

Nonnymum · 18/06/2019 13:56

To be honest I would be worried about putting them in the dishwasher. Do your glasses have a coating on them, I find that some painted plates fade in the dishwasher so I would guess a dishwasher wouldn't be very good for lenses.

Buster72 · 18/06/2019 13:57

The heatvwill warp the frames.

Scrub with a dettol solution perhapd

FirstTimeDogParent · 18/06/2019 13:59

I agree that the salt etc is likely to ruin any lens coatings and it might also cause issues with any metals (hinges etc) in your glasses. The heat could distort any moulded plastics. Just give them a wash with warm soapy water in the sink.

MrsMaow · 18/06/2019 13:59

Good points and ideas, thanks.

We have a steam steriliser so no Milton stuff available, I think I’ll give them a good going over with an antibacterial wipe and then a good rinse.

Thanks again, thank fuck I also have contacts to be able to read this thread Smile

If you really must then put them in a very weak bleach solution for a minute. But I think you're being way overcautious.

Auldspinster · 18/06/2019 14:34

Hottish soapy water will do the trick then clean them with some alcohol.
