Dropping out of university

My brother started a Masters in Biomedical Science in September but has been suffering from fairly severe depression. Things worsened over Christmas and my parents agreed he should quit university in order to focus on his mental health. He is due to start a graduate scheme with a pharmaceutical company in September (which he secured before his mental health deteriorated) and Dbro saw this as his number 1 priority.

Thankfully he has turned a major corner. He is academically very successful but the pressure of performing on a high level for almost 10 years has taken its toll but the extended break has done wonders.

Anyway, my parents typed up an email for him to send to his university outlining his situation in January. It has become clear that the university was not made of the situation despite what my brother told us all. The university is pushing my brother to repeat part of the year but he is adamant that he is completely done with academics.

I was wondering whether any of you have dealt with similar situations. We're not really sure how best to proceed as we appear to be at loggerheads with the university who are really pushing Dbro to repeat/resit assignments he has not had lectures for. The university appears keen to emphasise the fact that my brother was averaging 82 in his first term.

Very confused! We're going around in circles.

Hi Saavi,

What are the consequences for your brother if he doesn't repeat/resit the assignments? The University does need to make adjustments for disability (including severe depression) but it might be that he needs to resit the assessments in order to pass the course.

I think it means he won't pass the course which he accepts and is fine with.

There should be a 'withdrawal from studies' form (or similar) available from the university registry (or similar). He needs to go and ask for it of his mind is made up.
