...to wonder why people are so rude about vegans?

Obviously not everyone, but in general, I can’t go a single day without hearing a comment or spotting an eye roll if the word ‘vegan’ is spoken out loud. It’s like a dirty word. Ironically a word usually brought up by someone who isn’t vegan, but starts the conversation and then takes offence at it. It’s really bizarre.

Over and over again you hear associated words like... fad, militant, extreme, unhealthy...

Why? Why do some non-vegans take such an interest, and such an offence to it all?

Non-vegans who don’t care or are supportive - you are awesome! Please keep doing what you’re doing, it’s really refreshing.

@MoreSlidingDoors
In my experience, there are more veggie and vegan options available in restaurants now than there used to be. I quite often order one of the veggie options. I do live in a large city though, maybe options are more limited in other places?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 18/06/2019 14:24

So veganism isn't valid because some vegans eat avocados (so do meat eaters) and fly and drive. Basically it comes down to - it's my choice to eat meat and dairy/ fly long haul/drive and I don't give a care about the planet or anyone else,

It is valid as a personal life choice.

It isn't valid as way of saving the planet if its supposed environmental benefits are offset, neutralised or even made worse by by other environmentally wasteful things you do, or by the very nature of what being vegan necessitates no.

SwimmerGirl40 · 18/06/2019 14:27

I can’t say I’ve ever been harassed by militant vegans!

I have seen some militant vegan graffiti popping up around my city though 😀

FattopotamusAndChips · 18/06/2019 14:28

Things being promoted as vegan eg cereal and the little leaf sign suggests health. Well of course cereal is vegan duh!!! Doesn’t mean it’s healthy

You need to learn your symbols before you say more silly things. The little leaf is actually a grain symbol cross out (known as the crossed grain symbol) to show there is no gluten.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 18/06/2019 14:33

I think you will find most cereals are not vegan as they usually have non vegan vitamin d in.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 18/06/2019 14:35

So a vegan symbol on cereal isn't that daft really...

deydododatdodontdeydo · 18/06/2019 14:38

I wouldn't say most, but some.
"Most" vegans know about this, unless they are very new.

ChippingInLowCarbing · 18/06/2019 14:38

Lots of cereal has honey in it too

SwimmerGirl40 · 18/06/2019 14:40

@FaderInvader
I’ve got a copy of the Bean Book by Rose Elliott on the way. My friend made some veggie scotch eggs and used the lentil loaf recipe instead of sausage meat, they were delicious. I think I’m becoming a bit of a bean evangelical myself!

deydododatdodontdeydo · 18/06/2019 14:42

Lots of cereal has honey in it too

Some has, and it would be listed as an ingredient.

BMW6 · 18/06/2019 14:44

Out of interest, if everyone became vegan would chickens, sheep, cows and cattle etc become extinct?

ChippingInLowCarbing · 18/06/2019 14:44

Some has, and it would be listed as an ingredient

...and??

That doesn’t mean it cannot also have a sign or statement that it’s vegan if it doesn’t. It just makes shopping easier if it has a symbol rather than having to read the ingredients list on every product

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 18/06/2019 14:47

I'm all for a vegan lifestyle (for others, not me) and would fully support someone being vegan but it's dickheads that bother me.

The saying "How do you know someone is vegan?"
"They'll fucking tell you" is so stupid. It's the arsehole ones that will tell you. People don't think badly of the other 20 vegans they meet because they have no idea they are vegan!

When I was a waitress years ago we had a lady come in. You could tell she was a "I want to speak to your manager" type immediately. Snippy from the get go. She went on a huge rant about our lack of vegan choices, (it was a particular place specialising in Scottish cuisine that included haggis, scallops, black pudding, locally shot wild game and Aberdeen Angus Steaks). Nothing was good enough for her and the things we served were apparently horrendous (the terms animal corpses, murder and flesh were used). She slated our restaurant online later too. Thing is, one small call ahead would have given the chef who was also the owner a chance to knock a small menu up. Now he can't stand vegans.

Vix20678 · 18/06/2019 14:49

@EarlGreyOfTwinings yes really! Not every single time but it happens a lot.

Vix20678 · 18/06/2019 14:50

@BMW6 is that a serious question?

deydododatdodontdeydo · 18/06/2019 14:51

Out of interest, if everyone became vegan would chickens, sheep, cows and cattle etc become extinct?

These animals are created simply to be killed (or kept for eggs then killed), so why would they be created if nobody did that?
They have also been bred for their purpose, so they're not natural either.
Wild cattle are long gone, sadly.

Siameasy · 18/06/2019 14:57

I first noticed the vegan symbol on my DD’s Shreddies. There you go keyboard warrior-vegan leaf photo before you say any more silly things. Shreddies aren’t gluten free so why would it be a crossed out grain?!

Giants like Nestlé cynically exploiting the latest trend.

...to wonder why people are so rude about vegans?
Siameasy · 18/06/2019 14:58

Photo hopefully will work this time

...to wonder why people are so rude about vegans?
QueenOfTheTofuTree · 18/06/2019 15:01

Again, a lot of cereals are not vegan as they contain honey or non vegan vitamin d. So a vegan symbol on one that happens to be vegan is not necessarily daft.

FattopotamusAndChips · 18/06/2019 15:02

I think you will find most cereals are not vegan as they usually have non vegan vitamin d in unsure if that was in response to my post or not. I was pointing out that the poster who thinks the symbol for vegan food produce was the gluten free crossed grain symbol. This type of misunderstanding shows some people don't know what they are talking about, grumbling about bloody vegans needing the crossed grain symbol on cereals. None of it matters. Some people are vegans, some people aren't, but let's not let a lack of knowledge get in the way of another reason to be angry at vegans?

I am not a vegan or vegetarian, just someone who finds any prejudice difficult to understand.

MoreSlidingDoors · 18/06/2019 15:04

Slightly ironic buying Nestle vegan projects given their causing of so many needless infant deaths! Humans are less important than animals to them, clearly!

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 18/06/2019 15:06

I was talking to the poster who seemed to think it was strange for cereal to be marketed as vegan.

FattopotamusAndChips · 18/06/2019 15:07

QueenOfTheTofuTree ah OK, sorry. Just coincidence it appeared straight after my post.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 18/06/2019 15:07

Some has, and it would be listed as an ingredient

...and??

Sorry, we are at cross purposes. Or rather the same. I misunderstood what you were saying.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 18/06/2019 15:09

Many many vegans avoid Nestle, Unilever and a whole host of other unethical companies where possible.
