A study of 268 boys over 70 years found amongst other things, that boys who do chores at home, tend to be happier as adults.

Mine all left home fully equipped to run their own home. They were responsible for washing their own clothes from the age of 14 onwards (I still washed sheets, towels etc and anything special) They could all cook a basic meal and would all hoover up without being asked or nagged.

I once went away for a weekend and came home to an immaculate house and dinner cooked for me. It was only when a neighbour told me several days later that I discovered they had a big party with their guests staying over for Sunday roast lunch.

I really can't understand why people would find this unusual. Surely a huge part of parenting is to ensure that they go out into the world ready to deal with it.

Hollow laugh from the teenage corner, where we had perfectly capable kids til 13 when they decided they would be waited on hand and foot

Are posters reading the same article as I am? It's about the importance of close relationships. No mention whatsoever of chores ??????

Young men in the past had to learnt basic household skills.

All national servicemen were taught to clean flours/toilets etc. They also had to wash and iron their own clothes, and learn basic sewing skills. Anything not done to a high standard was redone.

nagynolonger · 18/06/2019 05:42

Yes maybe I should have read the article!

Beechview · 18/06/2019 07:10

I couldn’t see anything about chores in that article either so I just googled to see if the wrong one was linked.
I could only find a study on kids and chores not anything specifically about boys, though it would apply to boys too.

Sofasurfingsally · 18/06/2019 09:18

Where does it talk about housework? I read it and then scanned it and seem to have missed it.,

jennymanara · 18/06/2019 17:15

Apologies, I was googling last night about research into what makes a good parent and I have obviously linked the wrong bit of research. I am cooking tea at the moment, but will try and find and link it later.
