Building work, is this price worth it?

So basically Ive received a quote about some work I’m going to be getting done, before I give u the price could you give my your ideas of what u think would be reasonable. This price is labour only, all materials would be ours. Tilling in hallway, kitchen and bathroom. Laminate flooring in two rooms. Putting a board to separate two rooms. Fitting a 8unit kitchen. Ideas of prices please. Thank u

@DisplayPurposesOnly that's really cheap for a tradesman where I live, you'd get an odd job man for that but not a builder/tiler/carpenter

Happyspud · 18/06/2019 08:35

Not much less than £10k. But those are shitty little jobs for a builder so it’s possible you’ve been quoted way more in the hope that you won’t use the builder!

This entirely depends on size of areas, number of cuts needed, any electric alterations, is there plumbing, are there worktops? I assume a stud wall also, never heard of a board being installed to separate rooms, unless maybe a small divide that’s more cosmetic not a full wall but I’d still expect more than aboard. Don’t forget if it’s a reputable company they have overheads too, insurance, tax, H&s, first aid training, legal waste disposal (if there’s a lot coming out, old floors, old kitchen etc this can add up).

As a pp said, an odd job man might have a daily rate suggested by another pp but a company has to factor all of the above with making a profit on top of paying the teams daily rate.

Op, it sounds as though you’ve only got one quote, get three. Someone who is quiet at the moment (and the construction trade is suffering in some areas with brexit uncertainty, can’t speak for everyone or everywhere) they might quote low, someone who is busy may be quoting higher, as fitting in your work is a headache so they won’t to make maximum money for the extra mile they will have to go. 3 quotes will show you if anyone is coming in particularly high.

That's so annoying.

I'm going to @Dingledongledoo the OP so she gets an annoying email.

That's your punishment for leaving us hanging.

Tiler about £50 per sq metre
A good chippy with own van tools etc and 10 year exp £300 per day in south east couple of days on laminate floor inc edging and £100 per unit in the kitchen

How longs a piece of string really !

billysboy · 18/06/2019 19:46

I work in the south east and central London and am paying labourers £120 per day and decent trades anywhere between £250 and £300
Plumbers and sparks will earn more on a price as will any trade

I have some floor fitters laying a vinyl floor in an office tomorrow about 30 m , they will have to lay a latex screed first and then start getting the vinyl glued down , they are charging £1440 materials are about £400 so will have a busy day but both pick up £500 as they are on a price

These fitters are very busy with plenty of other work
