Watching Pretty Woman as my little boy is poorly and asleep in my lap (5 months before anyone says it's not appropriate viewing!) - when Edward orders snails for Vivienne in the restaurant- what a dick move knowing how hard they are to eat!!!

She says to go ahead

She starts to say 'Yeah, go ahead', then stops herself and says 'Please do so' because she thinks it's posher Grin.

Dreadful film (helpful)

Gth1234 · 17/06/2019 17:30

Eddie Murphy in Trading Places

"Look at that S Car Go"

Gth1234 · 17/06/2019 17:37

I will have these wrong, but the scene in the shop is great.

"We need lots of sucking up"
"You are a very powerful man"
"Not Me"
"Is that a large amount or a very large amount"
"An obscene amount"

It's a wonderful film.

The director's cut makes quite a difference to the film, I think.

dustarr73 · 17/06/2019 17:43

My favourite part of the film is when she goes bag to the shop that wouldnt serve her.

And i think the Lawyer friend even if he said something, people would just think it was sour grapes

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 17/06/2019 17:44

Even though she did ask him, why would you order snails if you weren't certain that someone would like them?

I love "big mistake, huge" though. And I have actually done something similar to a rather unhelpful sales woman.

@DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops come on tell us

AdaColeman · 17/06/2019 18:05

redspider "I'd eat a badger to sleep with Richard Gere."

That's the best line of the day on MN!

Would that be a casseroled badger or a badger pie though? Wine

The80sweregreat · 17/06/2019 18:25

I watched 'when Harry met sally' the other day and her ' on the side' ordering makes me laugh.
I dislike unusual food, so I would have turned down the snails!

The80sweregreat · 17/06/2019 18:27

Paddy and Keith lemons ' pretty woman' remake was funny!

ChoudeBruxelles · 17/06/2019 18:31

I think the point is that he is paying for her so she has no control. It’s not the same as you or I going on a date.

It’s also all made up.

twattymctwatterson · 17/06/2019 18:40

Becoming a feminist ruined Pretty Woman for me. It's a pretty horrible story all told.

NEtoN10 · 17/06/2019 18:43

@Gth1234 what is the directors cut?!!! 😲

I remember watching it as a kid (probably way too young!) and wondering why she had lollies in so many colours when she says "pick one, I got red, blue, yellow." About the condoms! To this day I've never seen a red condom 😂

I read once that in the original script Vivienne was a complete crack addict and it was a much darker story.

Gth1234 · 18/06/2019 10:05

@NEtoN10

A slightly different version.

www.imdb.com/title/tt0100405/alternateversions

for me, I remember the changes at the start, which seemed to change the light-heartedness of the initial meeting to something more dangerous.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 18/06/2019 19:58

@dustarr73 it was neither big nor clever and I wasn't chucked out like Vivienne but using the line was immensely satisfying.

I had a big Debenhams voucher to splurge, wanted to use it on a new skin care routine from Clarins. They had no one serving and I wanted advice, not just re-sale that someone else could do. I was at Westfield so carried on shopping and popped back about three times over 2.5 hours until they were the last shop on my list. Sat at the little table to wait and immediately the Estee Lauder lady saw and bustled over, saying the Clarins lady was working solo & doing an inventory, so no service. My mum commented that this wasn't a good staffing policy by the store- not useful customers or fair on the staff losing sales and Estee Lauder lady sighed and said she'd get Miss Clarins. Came back to say colleague was on her way and asked that we "would be nice to her, won't you", the way you'd talk to a naughty toddler. Feeling patronised, mum commented that we hadn't been rude- merely pointed out that the situation was not ideal and she sympathised with the staff, actually. Estee Lauder lady decided we were clearly trouble and said quite huffily that there was a customer service point upstairs if we wanted to complain.

Then I tore it by asking if anyone would actually be there to complain to. Lauder lady flounced off to fetch a manager and we scarpered to HoF (years before sports direct) and got great service and loads of freebies. We are both PW fans so we knew what to do. Went back to see the Estee Lauder lady- who wasn't serving anyone so we walked straight up, and before she could start squawking, flashed the very full bag at her, said "Big mistake. Huge." (Honestly, it deserved a direct quote) and marched out! I'm not sorry, either.

I love it DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops

dustarr73 · 18/06/2019 21:02

@DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops I disagree, that was very big and clever.I would have loved to see her face.

MorganKitten · 18/06/2019 21:11

I might be the only person to hate that film

BasilFaulty · 18/06/2019 22:32

Oh my god I thought this too!! I always wanted the red one but if she wasn't out of purple I'd be all over that.

bridgetreilly · 18/06/2019 22:34

Maybe he thinks it would be nice for her to try something she probably usually doesn't get the chance to? I mean, it's definitely the wrong choice, but I don't think it's necessarily malicious, just thoughtless.

NEtoN10 · 18/06/2019 22:34

Love the idea that all the men are after the sacred purple one 😂😂😂

Oh he's a nob. She could do better. Oh and when he makes her the offer for a week of sex free prostitution, then tells her he would have paid more. Jesus everything's a power trip for him.

I loved it aged 12. Not so much when I watched it as an adult.

Although I do love a makeover montage. And some lines are hardwired into my brain "work it baby..", "big mistake huge", plus kit does best obnoxious gum chewing this side of the 80s.

Did you remember "you work on commission?"
