I'm currently on mat leave so watching a lot of quiz shows (dont judge me.) I am so sick of contestants either proudly saying they dont know because they weren't born... or fairly announcing they'd never heard of the answer.
Both show ignorance. I wasn't born when Shakespeare was around but I know a bit about his plays! Grr. Glad to have something trivial to wind me up!

I remember watching a quiz show last year , the contestant did not know which country the Colosseum was in because they had only been on holiday to Spain

HomeMadeMadness · 16/06/2019 20:30

I think it depends though some culture is timeless and other bits of pop culture you'll only know about if you were of a certain age bracket. I do like getting wound up by random things on TV though so for that reason YANBU!

Singlenotsingle · 16/06/2019 20:33

I don't think they teach history and geography in schools any more, do they? They probably think media studies and lgbt studies are much more important.

Lavendersquare · 16/06/2019 20:45

I think you're being a bit unfair, I've been on a tv quiz show and things you know you know just can't be recalled and they encourage you to say something about your answer and in my case a load of rubbish came out of my mouth 🤦🏽‍♀️

Antigon · 16/06/2019 21:07

I think it depends on the question. Questions about 60s music would annoy me as I have zero interest in it because I wasn’t born then but questions about the Vietnam war in the 60s would be fair game.

CanIGoToBedNow · 16/06/2019 21:13

I was watching Pointless a while ago and there was a contestant who though Denmark was a commonwealth country in the Southern Hemisphere....... these people are allowed to vote Hmm

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 16/06/2019 21:18

Depends on the question.

A lot of things are not obvious when you were too young or not even born in that era. Historical questions are more likely to be studied.

Even if you don't watch them, you will know the name of current trash tv shows. I bet your kids won't have the faintest clue what they are.

Tillygetsit · 16/06/2019 22:53

Lavender that's really interesting. I've been pondering applying to one but as I talk scribble on a regular basis it might not be a good idea!

I love quiz shows but you do sometimes wonder what planet people are from.

Especially tipping point... tipping point makes me despair.

avamiah · 16/06/2019 23:43

I love the Chase but recently there have been a load of half wits on ( no offence but how did they get on the show)????
I mean surely you have to pass some sort of general knowledge to get to the final stage of being on TV ?
Any thoughts ??

avamiah · 16/06/2019 23:48

And why does nobody ever gamble for the big money anymore and there are so many people taking the minus 😱😱.
I think the Chase needs to up its game with the contestants as those Chasers are winning far too easily .

Singlenotsingle · 16/06/2019 23:48

Yeah someone from the Chase phones you and asks some general knowledge questions. But if you sound like an interesting fun person, they take you anyway even if you get the questions wrong

avamiah · 16/06/2019 23:52

Singlenotsingle,
Really ?
That makes sense.

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 17/06/2019 06:25

Don't forget that your mind can go blank in front of cameras. It's easy to be confident in private in front of your tv, but go on a tv studio, with cash to win and some people panic.

PanteneProV · 17/06/2019 06:28

Spoken like a true dinosaur Grin

OP - I think you’re right on questions about history, literature and geography but for music / film etc I think it’s much harder to be informed about what happened before you were born because these genres move on so fast and your exposure to them is much more limited.

wanderings · 17/06/2019 06:45

My grandmother frequently ranted about how contestants on Fifteen to One knew so little about the Bible.

Singlenotsingle · 18/06/2019 19:45

True though, eh, Pantene?
Spoken like a true snowflake! Grin

Lavendersquare · 26/06/2019 06:55

@Singlenotsingle that's not correct, I've been on the Chase and they ask a few telephone questions after you apply then if you're ok they invite you to an audition where you play a proper game and question lots of questions, both written and verbally.
