Jeremy Corbyn wants to impose lifetime gift limits on children of £125,000

So we pay tax on what we earn. What we buy. And now this.. what's the point of working hard to help out our kids, for this to even be considered. Or AIBU?

There should be a tax on people who use the noun ‘gift’ as a verb. It would go a long way to wiping out the national debt. Jeremy Corbyn wants to tax gifts (noun) from parents to children. Boris Johnson wants to give (verb) wealthy pensioners a tax break. You don’t gift your kids money, you give them money. You wouldn’t say: ‘I gift you a gift’ would you?

SwimmerGirl40 · 17/06/2019 19:15

I agree with trying to ensure everyone has the same chance in early life - education, healthcare, housing etc. I’m happy to pay tax to support this.

I disagree that I should hand over any more of my hard earned money to those have chosen to be a burden on the tax payer (single mothers playing the 16 hour a week scam even though their kids are in school being an example).

A girl from my year at school is a professional benefits mother. She has been popping them out since she was 18 to get a free flat and has just had another one age 40 to ensure she can spend another 18 years living on other people’s money. How is this fair? Why should I be forced to pay for this?

Zipee · 17/06/2019 19:16

Jeremy Corbyn didn't come up with the policy.

The term gift is used by HMRC.

merrymouse · 17/06/2019 19:18

Usually I agree about 'gifting' things, but in HMRC speak it's used to make it clear that there was no compensation.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 17/06/2019 19:19

SwimmerGirl40

Cool story bro

merrymouse · 17/06/2019 19:22

Why should I be forced to pay for this?

Because her children exist whether you like it or not, and they need a home, and your life will be better if you life in a society where children aren't begging on the streets.

Perhaps not 'fair', but better than the alternatives.

Alsohuman · 17/06/2019 19:27

@SwimmerGirl40, would you feel better if I was paying for her children and your taxes were funding something else? Because I don’t really mind.

Baby2nov2019 · 17/06/2019 19:30

It may level the playing field and open up the property market to make it more reasonable for all. I haven’t seen anything about this on any news sites though? So funny how so many people are thinking this is outrageous, just goes to show how many people here must have been supported massively through their lives. In regards to the uni issue, uni fees are £10,000 a year, so yes, you could still support your children... also Corbyn would definitely scrap top up uni fees so that point is null and void.

CendrillonSings · 17/06/2019 19:34

Maybe it's not Labour policy ... yet. But does anyone believe that Corbyn and his fellow-travellers wouldn't just love this kind of extortion? The new Venezuela Utopia ain't gonna pay for itself!

SusieOwl4 · 17/06/2019 19:35

Please bear with me because I have been a labour voter . But it took me a while to get a handle on Jc. He just hates all “Rich “people. It does not matter if you have worked hard , employed people , provided growth to the country or any similar accomplishments. He will argue against tax cuts , even though the rules of economics show that more money in circulation provides more jobs . He says he hates the eu , but will vote against Brexit because of the unions. I will never vote labour again whilst he is in charge. To achieve his “utopia” he will spend spend spend . And to hell with the consequences.

sunglasses123 · 17/06/2019 19:40

I think JC is a plank with daft ideas but I do have a real concern that despite people thinking he is a clown and a joke he could have a real chance of being the next PM. Look at how Diane Abbott gets in time and time again with huge majorities. Someone is voting for these people.

CendrillonSings · 17/06/2019 19:44

Too true, sunglasses. The only way Abbott could lose her seat would be if they put her in charge of counting the votes... Grin

Zipee · 17/06/2019 19:45

"the rules of economics show that more money in circulation provides more jobs"

Au contraire. Cutting taxes for the wealthy does not lead to more jobs, they have a larger marginal propensity to save than consume. Trickle down economics has been proved not to work.

Again with the Venezuala rote learned critique.

Alsohuman · 17/06/2019 19:46

@CendrillonSings 🤣

Zipee · 17/06/2019 19:46

Funny how Abbott gets such stick when 5 Tory ministers including the Chancellor fucked up figures in interviews during the last election and nothing is said.

Zipee · 17/06/2019 19:47

But then the Tories are looking to elect a man twice sacked for lying, a philanderer, who has flip flopped in the major issue he had campaigned on and never shown himself to be competent in any role.

But hey.

CendrillonSings · 17/06/2019 19:48

Good evening, Diane.

Zipee · 17/06/2019 19:49

You don't think its interesting?

Funny that

CendrillonSings · 17/06/2019 19:55

Oh, and if Corbynites don't want to get shit for singing the praises of the bankrupt socialist dictatorship that is Venezuela, maybe they shouldn't have done it ... so ... many ... times.

reaction.life/ten-times-corbynistas-praised-chavez-maduros-venezuela/

Zipee · 17/06/2019 20:00

If Righties want to use Venezula ad an example perhaps they might want to explain which of the policies is modelled on Venezuala and not similar to those of Nordic states.

Which ones.

Be specific.

Zipee · 17/06/2019 20:02

Oh and also need to explain how primary resource dependency and the effect of the resource curse will impact the UK. That and interference from foreign agents.. oh.

SusieOwl4 · 17/06/2019 20:09

I stick with what I said . And I would welcome an affective leader of the opposition because it keeps the party in office on their toes . Watching JC at pm question time is painful , his repetitive monotonous drivel is embarrassing. It’s so easy to criticise and point out problems , of which there are many , but the clever thing is to provide workable solutions and I don’t believe he does that . Like I said I would vote labour again , but never with him as leader . IMO 😀

Zipee · 17/06/2019 20:09

And that article.is hilariously tenuous.

"Someone once said something before the crisis started" appears to be its main critique.

SusieOwl4 · 17/06/2019 20:14

So what is Jc plan about primary resource dependency ? Is that not where the Eu has had a good influence ? And if you could clarify his opinion on Brexit I would be forever grateful ?

Zipee · 17/06/2019 20:16

Why would the UK suffer from primary resource dependency?

Which primary resource is our economy dependent on?
