I’m wondering if it’s just me that doesn’t cope with them well or over thinks things ..., are all bosses compulsive liars, contradictory and volatile or have I been unlucky .... on my 4th one

I've had loads of great bosses over the years. But the two who were complete nightmares had a huge negative effect on my life. All of it.

But I've had more good ones than bad.

I have a tricky one at the moment, quite autocratic and micro managing but have been lucky and had mostly lovely ones in the past. I am considering leaving my current job because of her and going back to my last job with my lovely previous boss there even though I know it will possibly be career suicide. My current one sets off my anxiety even though I don't see them much, just seeing their name come up on a skype call is enough to send me into a panic.

50/50

Had some truly great bosses but had some sociopaths too. Most have been meh.

TheFaerieQueene · 15/06/2019 17:10

Yes. All of them, every last single one. Me particularly, I was batshit! 🤣

In my experience not everyone is cut out to be a manager, it requires leadership and people skills that not everyone has.

Unfortunately many businesses seem to use managers as a promotion/development step, and although they have good knowledge of the job/business from their experience that doesn’t guarantee you’ll be a good people manager too. If you work somewhere for years and know the job inside and out, it makes sense to promote you to a more senior role - but it doesn’t mean you’ll be good at managing people too.

The current manager of our department isn't mental. He's a spineless, yes man who wants to be liked by everyone so agrees to everything which includes spunking our budget away. We don't work to strict budgets but at one point this financial year (Aug - July) we we're marked as £70,000 overspent as he was handing out money left right and centre... all while the university (and our wider department in general) was being investigated for financial misconduct, but he's made of teflon apparently so nothing negative ever sticks to him.

Inliverpool1 · 15/06/2019 17:24

How do you handle it ? The boys in my office just seem to ignore the complete mental ness where as I spend half the day with my gob open and chin on the floor at the outright lies ..., not even big lies just like literally cannot tell the truth about what he had for lunch

Mine is as thick as two short planks. The only reason he's the boss is because his brother created a job especially for him.

katseyes7 · 15/06/2019 18:24

We had one line manager who was as mad as a brush. Constantly micro managed, announced procedural changes without consultation as to whether they'd work or not, and took no notice when staff explained why they wouldn't. She'd then come back after the senior manager had told her they wouldn't work, and do a complete u-turn. She actually ended up being sacked after virtually stalking the senior manager.
The one we had after her was an absolute joy. Trusted us to get on with the job, didn't bother us, but her door was always open if we needed her. lt was wonderful.

hopeishere · 15/06/2019 18:25

I've had two (men) that I got on with but one was a bit spineless.

I've had two women and wasn't impressed either. One was a total bitch and if you fell out of favour with her it was curtains.

Current boss I get on with but she a) talks too much b) talks about herself too much c) won't tackle the issues in the office and d) is allowing us to drift along with no clear plans. This is not helped by point c above and she now has a management team that can't / don't work together.

Houseofmirth66 · 15/06/2019 19:09

I am a boss and I’ve had staff who’ve left for different roles who’ve written notes thanking me and saying they couldn’t have wished for better support and that I am the best boss they’ve ever had. On the other hand I had one who said I was an ‘imbecilic c**t’ and a ‘psychopath’. That one threw a block of post-it pads at me on his way out. So there we are. It’s harder than it looks.

HollaHolla · 15/06/2019 19:13

My current one is a sociopath. Has been promoted far beyond their abilities. Have gotten two promotions through the back door, because they’re pals with the big boss. No leadership skills at all.
Luckily we’re largely self-managing, but at the moment, they’re being particularly difficult. It’s seriously making me want to leave a job I really like the rest of... :(
