Is the Titanic film suitable for a 7 year old?

My daughter is covering the story of the Titanic at school at the moment and wants to watch the film.

I’ve seen it many years ago but can’t really remember much as to whether it would be ok for a 7 year old to watch. I’d obviously skip the sex scene but is there anything else that would make it unsuitable?

Channel 4 did an excellent documentary which my son also loved which suggested a fire from the boiler room compromised the hull resulting in a weakness in the ship, suggesting that was the real cause of the sinking!

www.channel4.com/programmes/titanic-the-new-evidence. This may be more suitable

@landlubber2019 Thank you I’ll have a look at that, she’s been inventing conspiracy theories so she will probably love a different take on it.

That's a really strange topic for 7 year olds. Are you in the UK? You can't really get your teeth into that at 7.

Biancadelrioisback · 15/06/2019 17:02

I think I was about 7 when it came out, or just older.
I remember watching it at a friend's house while having a sleepover and I was very, very sad. But I then went to work on ships when I was early 20s and I remember them playing it on the crew channels, that upset me more

Logged in to also suggest A Night to Remember. Can't locate my copy at the moment to check the rating. DD took it into school when they did the Titanic a while back My mum was in it (for 1 second or so). Haven't seen it for a while but it is really good.

OP It's also inaccurate about what the sailors did on board, eg people threatening passengers with guns. But then the upstairs/downstairs love affair is inaccurate. You could do a bit of research yourself or encourage DD to look at eg the number of people who escaped, the fact proportionately fewer escaped from third class, the fact that White Line stopped all pay for those on board from when they died .. and if you're near southampton find the Musician's Union tribute to those who died playing.

My 7 yo is also covering it at school. I let him watch. We fast forwarded the sex scene as he was a bit bored. He only wanted to watch it from the bit where it hits the iceberg.

There is some swearing and once of the crew shoots someone, then shoots himself. DS was ok with this, we used it to talk about emotions and why someone would immediately regret something, and how it's better to take time and talk to loved ones/not react immediately to anything. He was very grown up about it and is fascinated by the titanic.

There is no blood and gore. But why don't you watch it tonight with a glass of wine and check it for yourself? This is what I tend to do, then write down the times to mute any bad language. I was totally shocked that Harry Potter has bastard in the first few mins of the film, and that's a PG!!

@Barbie222 UK here, totally normal topic to cover.
Mine covered Titanic in year 2 so they'll have been about 6 or 7.

Seconding @elQuintoConyo suggestion. A Night to Remember the black and white film. It's actually on YouTube free and high quality

My nephew (20 something now) was absolutely OBSESSED with the film when he was about that age. "The Boat" was the only film he insisted on watching over and over and over again.

Doesn't seem to have done him any harm.
