To ask how long it takes you to save for your holiday?

Since having DC, my husband and I have only holidayed with PIL. Money is tighter than before (although far from ‘tight’ - I’m not crying poverty) so PIL always pay for the accommodation and travel (ferry) but we stay in the U.K. so petrol etc is out cost. We share all the food shopping and treat them several times too.

However, in 2 years my youngest will be getting 30 free hours and we’ll be able to afford a sunny holiday abroad.

I saw a holiday for about £3k which looked lovely. That would take 5/6 months of saving. Does that seem mad?

The only think with saving like crazy for a holiday is the risk of being disappointed because you put your expectations too high.

You are not unreasonable at all to want a decent one, of course, but be realistic about it so you have a lovely time once you are there.

I don't save a set amount, I just try not to overspend and stay sensible each month so we see what we are left with when we book our holidays.

when Boris brings in his tax cut for higher rate taxpayers

it's only for £50k to £80k income, hardly the high tax payer you have in mind, no need to fret about it.

We don't save specifically for holidays, and again we also save around £1500 a month. it just sits in a pot for any needs we may have. New car or a holiday house repairs etc.

I save 10% of my income every month for holidays. So in June I ‘pay myself’ a 13th salary iyswim. I then book all my holidays between Chritmas and new year, or end of January.

I have 3-4 holidays a year so save for 3 months
I don’t have much spare money so generally sell stuff on eBay through the year which also covers cost of Xmas, birthdays etc too

ScreamingValenta · 16/06/2019 10:33

We have cheap holidays, so no saving is necessary.

Myheartbelongsto · 16/06/2019 10:36

I normally pay for our holiday, myself and three children in January. Then I buy clothes etc the month we go and pay for accommodation when leaving and spending money is whatever we spend and I don't save for this, just spend when there and have a limit of about 1300 for the two weeks.

If you can save £500 a month, save £500 a month, and then around Easter time next year if nothing else has cropped up you've needed that money for, spend some of it on a holiday. If it's going to work out that you over all add £3k a year to your savings and spend £3k on holidays, that's not a bad decision to make.

DrCoconut · 16/06/2019 11:38

£3k for non essentials would take me around 3 years to save so 5/6m is very good going.

Thanks again.

We’re not massively high earners, but we are comfy as we are - a redundancy etc. would be a disaster.

We’d save all year plus our usual savings (prob £900 ish a month) and if the balance was there at booking time we’d book - I wouldn’t book on credit card etc.

Only ever did that for Honeymoon before the larger mortgage and dependents.
