He doesn’t drink anymore, else I would get a bottle of champagne.
Any ideas that I can get today?

Something for their garden to mark their 40th . It really depends on your budget tbh . If they were very good friends and I had around £100 to spend I’d get them a small carrs silver frame .

Not vouchers !

A bottle of seedli

A hamper - a local cheese or chocolate shop could do you one.

Or individual presents? Some perfume/aftershave each

A grown up board game eg Cards against humanity.

40th is Ruby, so maybe a dark red rosebush?

I HATE getting things for the garden. I don't often have time to spend in my garden and I dislike getting presents that are basically chores. Find a suitable not too shady not this that the other type of spot, that doesn't already have a plant in, then dick about making a hole then water the fucking thing exactly the right amount and perhaps find a stick for it to grow up, then put all the stuff you used away then scrub the mud out of your fingers, then get on with everything else you need to do, maybe you will look at the plant a few times in the next year and hope it grows, oh and remember to tell the person what a lovely idea it was.

I would rather have booze or cheese or a book token.

I read the op as joint 40th birthdays... not a 40th wedding anniversary?

GetUp totally agree, I loathe gardening but for some reason am frequently given plants which always die. Or worse I was once given garden vouchers Hmm fortunately a friend gave me cash for them.

But if you know someone genuinely likes gardening then garden vouchers are probably a good idea, but not plants as keen gardeners always seem quite choosy about what they will actually plant in their garden.
