To take up vaping?

I have been trying to quit smoking since I started over a decade ago with some success. I manage to go weeks, even months, over a year before (pregnancy and breastfeeding) but I always end up starting again. I get strong cravings which I often end up giving into and the starting trying to give up all over again. I have spent a high proportion of that time on nicotine replacement (NRT).
Anyway, I'm now not smoking but had lots of cravings. I have thought maybe I should get a vape or electronic cigarette (without nicotine preferably) instead of smoking. Am I being ridiculous and just need to find another way to deal with it?

AIBU to take up vaping?

do it, ive been vaping since march and doing quite well, will only smoke when drinking now and the vape curbs the cravings

TheDarkPassenger · 14/06/2019 19:17

Worked and still works for me. I would never have quit without it. It’s my vice and it helps my anxiety a lot!

Bobbiepin · 14/06/2019 19:18

It worked for my DH. He's not had a cigarette in 4 years but the vape has nicotine and is used more than he smoked.

Pinkmouse6 · 14/06/2019 19:18

It’s worked for everyone I know but most of them don’t stop vaping. I only know two people who managed to stop vaping so now don’t need any nicotine but everyone else vapes years after quitting smoking.

Bilingualspingual · 14/06/2019 19:20

Have you read the classic Allen Carr book? It could help your mind catch up with your body...?

AuntGinny · 14/06/2019 19:22

Thanks. I find I'm having dreams where I'm lighting up. Sounds pathetic I know. I used to binge drink and chain smoke, before that I was a weed smoker although not done that in many years. But it's always been my relaxation. Putting on my favourite tunes with a nice cold drink and a few smokes. I really don't want the passive smoking and 2nd/3rd Hand Smoke and smell but also really craving badly. Any suggestions for one that's not too pricy and got the no nicotine liquid? Or should I find a vape shop and go have a chat with them? I don't want to get sold something overpriced which I can't afford

@Bilingualspingual

Yes I've had counselling 3 times for it and tried self hypnosis, acupuncture etc. As well.

It worked for me, having smoked for 15 years I now vape instead and have been doing so since February.
My mum, who was a heavy smoker for 30 + years now only vapes and doesn't understand why she didnt start sooner.
It has saved us both a fortune in just a few months.
You can also choose nicotine strength with the e-liquids you buy which helps.

BellatrixLestat · 14/06/2019 19:30

I did. Quit smoking 6 years ago but I suffered post natal anxiety after having my son in October and had an overwhelming urge to smoke so took up caping instead. If I hadn't I'd probably have gone back to smoking. Am now on nicotine gum

BellatrixLestat · 14/06/2019 19:31

Vaping*

kerkyra · 14/06/2019 19:36

I gave up smoking four years ago and went straight on to vaping. No cravings for a cigarette since. It is on me pretty much all the time though. It's called a blu and from the co op,cheap and cheerful!

mum11970 · 14/06/2019 19:40

I went from smoking to vaping with nicotine, to vaping nicotine free and then gave up completely.

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/06/2019 19:51

Im just making the move now to vaping without nicotine.

I went straight from smoking 20 a day (for about 20 years!) to vaping, have not smoked properly for 5 years (I had two ciggies in belgium in October, couldn't finish either and they made me feel SO pukey, bleurgh!)..

I vape a big box mod that produces the huge clouds of vape that offends Mumsnetters, I don't care cos I am still saving money and my health!

AuntGinny · 14/06/2019 19:56

@WiddlinDiddlin

Do you smoke it inside or outside?

@AuntGinny I buy all my liquid from One Pound E-Liquid. You could have a look on their website to see if anything takes your fancy? If you order stuff and don’t like it you won’t have spent much.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 14/06/2019 20:08

My husband tried to stop smoking plenty times and then switched to vaping 2.5 years ago, he started with nicotine and now has no nicotine but is working on stopping completely.

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 14/06/2019 20:18

I smoked for around 35 years apart from pregnancy. I’ve given up so many times with various degrees of success, but vaping has worked for me. I started on 6mg of nicotine and gradually reduced until I’m just on the liquid. I’ve not smoked a cigarette since January 2018 and don’t miss smoking at all.
I’d recommend a vape shop as there’s so much choice it can be a bit overwhelming. I personally don’t like the fruity oils, I go for caramel flavours.
Good luck OP

Houseofmirth66 · 14/06/2019 20:20

Worked for me too after 25 years of smoking. And get an odourless liquid so no-one moans.

locketsprocket · 14/06/2019 20:21

Do it I switched from smoking to vape in February and haven't had a fag since, I used to smoke 20 a day

ChiaraRimini · 14/06/2019 20:33

The choice of vapes on the market is a bit bewildering. I can recommend the Juul vape. It's much less burny on the throat than others and is very neat and easy to use.
You can buy the starter kit in Sainsbury's for £30 and replacement pods there too.
I quit cigarettes 2 months ago using it and wouldn't go back now.

AuntGinny · 14/06/2019 21:27

I used to smoke 20-30 a day but managed to cut down to 3-5 a day or nicotine gum (sometimes I wouldn't smoke for 2-3 days and then would just have a couple when stressed) so I can feel my excuses "why not just have one, you weren't even smoking much, you'd only have a few a day if that" yada yada. I don't want to start again so vaping seems like a much better option? Especially I could use the no nicotine liquid. I think I will go to a vaping shop. You're all reply helpful but when I'm looking these things up I'm just getting more confused!

itbemay1 · 14/06/2019 21:28

Go to a vape shop. Mine was so helpful, many of them are set up to provide smoking cessation. I've been using an aspire k3 for a year now, was smoking 20 a day. So glad I swapped.

£25 for the vape and juice is £10 for 3 bottles that last me at least 2 weeks. Coils last around 4 weeks, £5 each.

Much cheaper than smoking and my skin is better and I'm not coughing all the time and I'm not out of breath anywhere near as much.

PookieDo · 14/06/2019 21:33

I’ve vaped since I gave up and will never go back!

AuntGinny · 14/06/2019 21:33

@itbemay1

It's in the evenings that I really miss having something. Once the kids are in bed it would be nice to have that grown up thing that I do so I don't think I would use it that much but it would be so much better than giving in and getting some fags.

I don't know if maybe I should try the CBD liquid as it's supposed to help with insomnia and anxiety. And some other things? Much better than nicotine I think but worried people would misunderstand and think I'm getting high

itbemay1 · 14/06/2019 21:47

My DH uses the CBD vape occasionally, said it helps him relax.
