Hi, long time lurker but first time poster here.
I was thinking of setting up an online shop selling these handmade quilts/blanket/play mats and was wondering if anyone would consider buying one.
So Aibu to ask if you would buy one and also how much you would be willing to pay?

(Quilt is fleecy one side and cotton the other)
Thanks

Would you buy one of these

I think they look good - but I think they look too good. I wouldn't want to use it as a play mat in case it got ruined. I might use it for decorative purposes though. I think one would look beautiful in different fabric under the Christmas tree.

And I have no idea why I thought that in June!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 14/06/2019 18:44

They look good. Would they be machine washable? How big are they?

MustardScreams · 14/06/2019 18:45

I love it! I’d be willing to spend £30-£50 depending on size. Are they washable?

KC225 · 14/06/2019 18:47

Yes, I would buy it. Mine are too old now, but also triangles in different feeling fabrics or perhaps different coloured triangles for older ones learning colours.

Houseofdogs · 14/06/2019 18:48

Yes they would be machine washable
Measures 40 inches so about 1 metre in diameter

Me too. But more like £30 than £50.

Heratnumber7 · 14/06/2019 18:49

Also, I think they'd need to be bigger for a play mat.

Mummadeeze · 14/06/2019 18:51

I personally wouldn’t buy one because I buy children’s decor to appeal to my child. I think it looks too grown up / boring to be a play mat. Obviously very subjective though and am glad others like them.

Houseofdogs · 14/06/2019 18:58

Thank you for the feedback it’s really useful!

@LosingLola I will have to look into Christmassy fabrics in autumn !

@Mummadeeze yes, this is all the materials I had lying around the house aha, I was thinking in investing in more child friendly patterns, animals, space, dr Seuss, Disney etc. If I went ahead with my mini shop

Like the design, however fleece material is not great for anyone with pets - hair sticks like crazy! Same goes for velour type fabrics - made that mistake with my baby play gym, impossible to clean, despite going through washing machine.

Toodeloo · 14/06/2019 19:10

Nope. I wouldn’t. There are loads of them out there already. Some anti slip, some wipe-able, others double as a bag (string sewn in that can be pulled together). Sorry...

ohtheholidays · 14/06/2019 19:13

It's gorgeous and I'd pay £50-£60.

It's not like anything that I've seen before.

jennymanara · 14/06/2019 19:13

No I wouldn't. For me a play may has to be wipeable and more fun looking for a child. If I want something soft I would just use a blanket I already have.

Lamentations · 14/06/2019 19:16

I agree with the PP who suggested making Christmas tree skirts instead. It may not be what you had in mind but they might be more commercially successful. I'd pay up to £50 for a nice handmade one.

Ironmanrocks · 14/06/2019 19:24

I would stuff it and turn it into a massive cushion/beanbag! Id love a 'poof' like that!! (is that spelt correctly?)

Houseofdogs · 14/06/2019 19:43

Thanks again!

I hadn’t heard of a Christmas tree skirt before today 😳 , that could be a good way for me to go!

Also a giant cushion (though I may be tempted to keep it aha)

I think I will rethink and take a trip to the local fabric store and try some new ideas!

Be careful of copyright laws. I don’t think you can buy Disney fabric, make something with it and sell it legally. They are pretty strict about it unfortunately.

GPatz · 14/06/2019 19:49

I'd buy a black/white/red one for my newborn.

Vivavivienne · 14/06/2019 19:51

@Thingsthatgo

I agree, watch it with the character fabrics.

Faster · 14/06/2019 19:53

No I wouldn’t. But because I don’t see the point of playmats. I have carpeted floors.

Houseofdogs · 14/06/2019 20:06

@Thingsthatgo Oh, I didn’t know this, I’ll check before buying anything thanks

NCforpoo · 14/06/2019 20:31

I like that a lot! So I'd buy it for me!

TheCanyon · 14/06/2019 20:52

I wouldn't buy it either for a baby.

A playmat should be fun. Quilts/blankets should keep your feet cosy Grin

julensaor · 14/06/2019 23:15

I think you have done a beautiful job OP and you have something here, but it's purpose if not defined enough yet. If it's washable I don't see why it can't be a playmat (or just something you can carry around that you can put baby on if needed, so think about how it could fold up tight and neat)I never had a wipeable playmat, always just washed them. I never needed it to be anti-slip either. As you said yourself obviously the fabrics would be brighter and more fun for children or you could design your own fabric (you can get it printed via uploading to fabric printers online) or offer a bespoke thing around that.

I never needed a Christmas tree mat but I think a lot of people may like that idea (credit to @LosingLola), maybe google some other purposes and do try it out.

julensaor · 14/06/2019 23:23

oh maybe a dog bed mat type thing? you'd have to stuff it with a foam maybe 1.5 or 2 inches think and a zipper and use a durable fabric and again you could offer a personalisation thing, eg get the dogs name or photo printed on the fabric. Sorry I am probably going a bit off track! That of course would add to lead times and expense but people will pay for that kind of thing.
