'You don't toe the party line'

How would you feel if you were rejected for promotion for this reason?

Background - work for a third sector org, am (if I do say so myself) very good at my job which was acknowledged in feedback. Was told that I answered all questions proficiently but that 'they didn't feel I believed in my answers when it came to toeing the party line'.

Is this basically saying I'm a shit liar?

While I agree that a "yes men"/ group think environment is dangerous, I think effective corporate cultures recognise that there's a time for debate and a time for consensus.

I suppose the thing you didn't back 100% could be the reason, depending on your reasons for not backing it and the individuals involved (i.e. whether they considered your objections to be valid or not)

Do you work remotely by choice? I worked exclusively from home for 6 months due to an operation that made me very immobile. I found I became very "role bound"- i.e. I did my job fine but I didn't get involved in any wider initiatives and I think it did impact how I was perceived.

It's not civil service is it? Enough ridiculous policies there that are applied generally and don't work.

My group was told similar once because we politely complained about a policy that was being applied across the board. When told we would need to implement, we stated the facts why it couldn't work and how our work would have to change if they wanted it in place. Irony was a year later it was brushed under the carpet by the same people that it wouldn't be applied to our sector as it couldn't work!
