To think this was a breach of patient confidentiality?

Popped into my GP surgery today to order my repeat prescription. There was a queue in reception, so the receptionist was asking people if they needed to see the dispenser or see the GP. I replied that I just needed to see the dispenser to order my repeat and she told me 'Oh I can order that for you'. She then went over to her desk which was a good 15ft from me and called to me to confirm my name and address. She then asked if I wanted to order every item.on my repeat, which I actually didn't and told her so. She then asked (well, called over to me loudly as she was 15 ft away) which item I didn't want ordering?

Now, I really didn't want to have to call to her which item it was because it was personal and private. Also there happened to be my neighbour in the same queue and my DS's teacher, and I just didn't want them knowing what medication I was on!

So, I sort of half shrugged and smiled at the receptionist and said I didn't want to tell her infront of the entire queue. She immediately stood up and said snottily 'I was only trying to help' and started to call to the next person in the queue. I actually felt sheepish so told her I was grateful she was trying to help but I was entitled to a bit of patient confidentiality. But she abruptly interrupted me and told me ''Oh just go and see the dispenser if that's how you feel'. Her tone was so dismissive.

So I just sort of shuffled off to see the dispenser feeling about an inch tall. But surely I was right to want a bit of privacy? Couldn't she have got me to write down which medication I didn't need to reorder or something?

You were 100% right. You should complain because she needs some training.

Bluerussian · 13/06/2019 17:17

She was in the wrong. Dreadful woman.

youarenotkiddingme · 13/06/2019 17:19

I'm so sorry she made you feel that way. You absolutely have a right to keep your medical info private.

Write to practice manager and explain and ask that they provide staff training on patient confidentiality and respecting their privacy.
Thanks

Ithinkmycatisevil · 13/06/2019 17:20

You were right. She shouldn’t be shouting your info out across the surgery.

TheFastandCurious · 13/06/2019 17:22

Write to the practice manager. She was rude and completely out of order.

Alsohuman · 13/06/2019 17:23

I feel your pain. My GP confirmed my pregnancy in front of an entire waiting room full of people. Needless to say that was a long time ago. Please complain.

Namechangeishard · 13/06/2019 17:39

Do please bring it to the practice managers attention. That is shocking.

RogerBannister · 13/06/2019 18:07

Couldn’t you have just walked over to her desk when she called at you?

WindsweptEgret · 13/06/2019 18:15

Maybe she thought you meant you didn't want to tell her, when you actually didn't want to tell the room full of people? Did you have to stay in the queue if she was ordering it for you or could you have gone over to her desk?

RabbityMcRabbit · 13/06/2019 18:17

She was downright rude and unprofessional OP, you have every right to some privacy! Is there a practice manager you could raise this with?x

ConkerGame · 13/06/2019 18:20

Breach of GDPR - sharing your info without your consent. Complain to the practice manager.

ineedaknittedhat · 13/06/2019 18:24

You should have shouted back "would you like it if I let everyone in the room know I saw you buying haemorrhoid ointment in boots last week?"

avocadochocolate · 13/06/2019 18:26

@ineedaknittedhat Grin

Thatnovembernight · 13/06/2019 18:28

I’m really not one to make complaints but I would in this case. This is no way to speak to someone about a confidential medical matter. And she needs some training on GDPR.

Wonderbread · 13/06/2019 18:31

This is absolutely nothing to do with GDPR - people just love to bandy that around!

However it’s completely inappropriate so do complain

Honeybee85 · 13/06/2019 18:35

What an incredibly rude cow. I would be furious in your place and certainly not have reacted so friendly on this horrific behaviour from her side.

I would surely make an official complaint.
Though it might already have come back to bite her in the arse since other patients might be horrified too to see how patient confidentiality is being dealt with and might have mentioned it to practice manager or GP.

Lwmommy · 13/06/2019 18:36

Really struggling to understand why you didn't just step forward to where she was?

ASauvignonADay · 13/06/2019 18:42

I'm confused, why couldn't you have walked closer?

And did she actually say any of your sensitive info (can't see where it says so in your post)? Or just asked you to say it?

Orangesandlemons82 · 13/06/2019 18:45

I'm assuming OP couldn't walk closer as it is like our surgery where staff are behind a counter with desks going far back and you can't get nearer.

EleanorReally · 13/06/2019 18:49

oh that is awful.
she needs retraining.

Cheby · 13/06/2019 18:52

Complain

bookbuddy · 13/06/2019 18:54

It’s a confidentiality issue not GDPR definitely report to practice manager so they can provide further training in that area. General Data Protection Regulations will not be implied in that instance as it wasn’t a Data breach.

MonkeyTrap · 13/06/2019 18:56

You were 100% right. You should complain because she needs some training.

Exactly this.

FancyAPint · 13/06/2019 19:14

yes feed back to the practice manager.
My local pharmacy does this, it really pisses me off.

Tableclothing · 13/06/2019 19:17

Definitely complain, or she'll keep doing it to everyone.
