To think this is not acceptable conduct on public transport?

Yesterday I was on the tube on my way to work, reading my kindle and minding my own business, when I noticed a cloud of white dust particles settling on my black coat and trousers.

Looking up, I realised the origin of this dust cloud was a woman standing over me in the crowded carriage and vigourously filing her nails.

When I looked aghast and brushed myself down, she turned away from me but continued regardless.

AIBU to think no nail care situation is this urgent? I've no issue with people doing their make up when seated etc, but I do have some reservations about being covered in their bodily detritus!

It's certainly not pleasant but I thought it would be something far worse. It shows we now have very low expectations of behaviour on public transport.

Amibeingnaive · 13/06/2019 15:06

You're right. I should have said something. They must be stopped.

I wonder if it's because they think they'll never see any of their fellow commuters again, it's almost like any level of decency goes out the window?

Why cant people get ready at home, shaving, applying make up and eating cereal should all be done at home and not on public transport.

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 13/06/2019 15:09

Nail filing wouldn't bother me. Nor does women putting on makeup. Saw one putting on liquid eyeliner on a moving tube a few weeks ago and I was kind of in awe... she did it perfectly!

On the other hand I am irritated by people brushing their teeth in the work toilets and spitting all over the sinks, and MN consensus is that's fine.

Next up, vaginal steaming

CassianAndor · 13/06/2019 15:11

actually, I don't think public transport is full of people being gross, which is why it stands out when they are! But mainly my commute is people minding their own business reading their phones or books.

Inconsiderate jerks playing their music or watching TV without headphones is my biggest bugbear but even that doesn't happen every time (though it happens the most).

@TheJoxter
Divorce was the right choice, what a minger 🤮

I would rather people didn’t sit next to me doing their very powdery make up as well. I just want to relax on the train (I’m on it v early) and someone noisily rummaging through their make up bag and fidgeting is not conducive to that. Just get up 10 minutes earlier ! Having said that the amount of make up some of these women trowel on it takes them 10 minutes just to lay their brushes, sponges and buffing implements out on the (filthy) train table Envy definitely not envy Hmm

HippyTrails · 13/06/2019 15:30

so glad I don't use public transport - make up & even nail varnish applications would not bother me in the slightest but if people were eating & I could hear them crunching or slurping it would drive me insane

Greenglassteacup · 13/06/2019 15:31

I saw a woman eating yogurt with her hand as an impromptu scoop on a train to London once. It was gross

MadamMMA · 13/06/2019 15:34

Someone got on a bus I was on once and showed me a plastic bag full of and covered in shit and nearly fell on me with the bag when she got off the bus

Greenglassteacup · 13/06/2019 15:38

Oh my God Madam!!

MadamMMA · 13/06/2019 15:38

some people are disgusting. There are regular articles in the metro about the abysmal behaviour of some people - the photo of the woman shaving her legs stick to my mind!

Women putting make-up in the morning is so annoying too, they don't smell as bad as the ones putting nail varnish on, but I am always hoping they stab themselves in the eye. They just look dirty doing that in public transport.

The fact that a smelly man eating smelly food doesn't make it any more acceptable. Bleurgh Envy

Greenglassteacup · 13/06/2019 15:40

Bloody Nora ( wonder if it was human shit)

MargaretHoulihan · 13/06/2019 15:44

Disgusting, she might have had a nail infection for all you know.

teddyclown · 13/06/2019 15:47

Not quite the same thing, but an opportunity to vent....was on the train the other day and wondered why so many sit on the aisle seat, leaving the window seat free. So you either have to ask them to get up and let you into the window seat or else ask them to move over. I counted five like that in the one carriage. It was only a short journey, so I just stood - but just so inconsiderate.

MorondelaFrontera · 13/06/2019 15:52

why so many sit on the aisle seat, leaving the window seat free.

I can't understand what's so inconsiderate? You ask, they move, people are usually happy to get a seat! You won't even have to stand if an elderly person or with an obvious disability (if not, you can't guess) comes in.

They might find it more comfortable
They might have few stops and find it easier to get out quickly

If people prefer the aisle, they seat on aisle side, no issue.

SRK16 · 13/06/2019 15:53

I’ve seen people clipping their nails on the tube and letting the clippings drop to the floor 🤢
Nail filing bothers me but not as much as clipping.
Have also seen women emptying their hairbrushes into the tube floor 😳
People are grim.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 13/06/2019 15:54

It's just dead skin dust. Everybody sheds their entire outer layer of skin every two to four weeks. Nobody is keeping their skin flakes to themselves, wherever they are. She was just being a bit more generous by adding to the natural sloughing off process.

At least the tube dust mites will be happy.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 13/06/2019 15:55

Bloody hell @MadamMMA that is grim. It makes the bloke that offered me a share of his crack pipe look normal.

Piggle23 · 13/06/2019 15:58

Ugh I have a bit of a fear of people being weird on buses and trains. When I was a teenager a man whipped his penis out and started wanking in front of me and my friend and then followed us through a quiet station. Horrible. Still get nervous when I see people acting a bit strange.

WitsEnding · 13/06/2019 16:05

I prefer the aisle seat as I often need to use the loo and don't want to climb over someone who's settled. I'm always happy to let someone in to the window seat.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2019 16:09

Piggle, I once had a bloke sitting opposite me on a train, not only wank, but come all over a new pair of shoes.
He'd been trying to chat me up and I'd eventually pretended to nod off to avoid it, and only realised what he was doing as the train stopped, and he sort of half fell against me.
I was getting out at that station thank God.
It really grieved me, having to throw those shoes away.
