To be seriously concerned a nurse didn’t know this?!

Just been to the doctors and seen a practise nurse. I was prescribed antibiotics for a suspected minor localised infection. The nurse asked if there was any chance I could be pregnant. I told her there was a chance as we are currently TTC but that I wouldn’t know for a couple of weeks only half way through my cycle (cycles hit and miss but know I just ovulated so could be literally a couple of days pregnant maybe)
She told me this affected which antibiotic I could have so I needed to do a pregnancy test first and then depending on the results come back and get one of two types.
I told her I couldn’t do a test yet as it wouldn’t show anything and I would have to wait nearly 2 weeks til I am due on.
She then proceeds to say “no, these new tests are very sensitive... You can take one any time and it will tell you”
Hmm IS IT JUST ME?! Surely it is very worrying a nurse doesn’t know I can’t take a test two days after I’ve ovulated and magically know if i’m pregnant?! I am genuinely worried about the advice she could be giving people...

I presume she was just having a brain fart and mixing conception and last period date up.

CarrieBlu · 13/06/2019 13:52

In fairness, some of the new tests ARE very sensitive. I didn’t wait 2 weeks for any of my positive tests.

MrsBosh · 13/06/2019 13:56

Couldn't she have just prescribed the antib safe for pregnancy? Seems a waste of hers and your time to 'go back'.

CrossedToTheDarkSide · 13/06/2019 13:57

I insisted she prescribed the safe for pregnancy one and told her I wouldn’t go back as it was a waste of time. I was just really shocked to have to try and defend why I wouldn’t take a test today to a nurse!

She does sound pretty dumb...

Justgorgeous · 13/06/2019 13:59

I think you are over reacting.

Bluerussian · 13/06/2019 14:00

Neither did I and that was years ago.

Jemima232 · 13/06/2019 14:00

The pregnancy tests used at GP surgeries are not very sensitive at all, anyway.

It doesn't sound like this nurse is neither very well up in how soon pregnancy can be detected, nor in how crap the tests available in the NHS are.

Agree that she should just have avoided an antibiotic unsuited to pregnancy anyway.

Bluerussian · 13/06/2019 14:00

The above post was in response to CarrieBlu.

Bluerussian · 13/06/2019 14:01

PS: Nurses can prescribe now?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/06/2019 14:08

She's just doing a thorough job. And good for her.

Some people bleed in pregnancy and assume it's a period.
Some ovulate early.

She was just checked you aren't pregnant.

Can you imagine your thread if you were and she hadn't checked? Hmm

frumpety · 13/06/2019 14:16

Some nurses can prescribe , but have to do separate training to do so Bluerussian

icannotremember · 13/06/2019 14:20

For a nurse to think even the newest and most sensitive tests would give a reliable result within days of ovulation is fairly appalling.

I dont understand why people think the OP is complaining about the nurse asking if she is pregnant- her issue is that the nurse wrongly told her that a test would give a result now, just a few DPO.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/06/2019 14:22

For the reasons I just put.

WinterWife · 13/06/2019 14:27

Sorry but I agree with @DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou.

The nurse is just doing her job although she screwed up about the advice regarding the pregnancy tests showing early positives.

icannotremember · 13/06/2019 14:28

Sorry DontBite, if you are responding to my post I dont understand what you mean.

icannotremember · 13/06/2019 14:30

The OP is very clear she is annoyed that the nurse said "no, these new tests are very sensitive... You can take one any time and it will tell you”. Which is not true. And yet some of you are busy telling OP off for being annoyed that the nurse checked whether she was pregnant... when the OP has not complained about this at all.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/06/2019 14:31
Hmm

You said you don't understand why, I said in my first response but I will repeat it again.

Some people bleed in pregnancy and assume it's a period.
Some people ovulate early.

Some people are pregnant and they just don't realise.
The nurse was being thorough.

BumandChips · 13/06/2019 14:32

Nurses can prescribe now?

Yes if they do the prescribing course. And from what I’ve heard it’s a hideous course to do.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 13/06/2019 14:32

You're right.

That nurse, what a bitch for protecting the OP and any potential pregnancy.

Down with her. Hmm

JoJoSM2 · 13/06/2019 14:33

@DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou

If someone says they're txt, then you jut give them the antibiotic that is ok in pregnancy.

Sending someone off to do a test in 10 days or whenever to come back then is utterly dumb since they have an infection NOW and you can precribe something to treat it NOW.

And anyway, even if the OP went back in 2 weeks, with a negative pregnancy test, it'd only be reasonable to give the medication suitable in pregnancy as tests aren't 100% accurate.

So the nurse is dumb whichever way you look at it.

But the OP had already told the nurse there was a chance she might be pregnant. Since a test that early is likely to come back negative, if the nurse believed the test and prescribed the wrong antibiotic then the nurse is doing a pretty terrible job, thorough or not.

Teddybear45 · 13/06/2019 14:35

She’s a practice nurse not a fertility specialist. Many nurses and GPs and even midwives / Obs have no idea what fertility tests can and can’t do until they ttc themselves, ‘looking it up’ during a 10min appointment is a waste of time. As OP got her antibiotics anyway not sure what the big moan here is about

SirVixofVixHall · 13/06/2019 14:37

The nurse was suggesting that drugs contra-indicated in pregnancy would be fine if their test came back negative, even though the OP clearly stated that she could be pregnant, but too early to test.
So the nurse was not being helpful at all, and could have put the OPs health at risk.
