To plan a holiday to Sri Lanka?

My DP & I are getting married in November.
Before the awful terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka in April we were set on going there for honeymoon. It looks like an amazing country and ticks all of our boxes for a holiday - culture, food, wildlife, beaches for a bit of relaxation and beautiful scenery. It's also warm there at the end of November/start of December.

The Home Office travel ban on Sri Lanka has now been lifted and we could go back to planning our honeymoon. AIBU to consider doing this?!

The Home Office Advice regarding terrorism for Sri Lanka is now the same as that for Paris where we go regularly. And is basically the same risk level as London, where we live & work centrally.

We can get a really amazing holiday for our money. And in fact now we would get more for our money than we thought as the tourism scene in Sri Lanka is keen to get tourists there again. Am I being naive in thinking it's ok to go back to this plan?
My advice to people worried about terrorism in London is normally to carry on as normal otherwise "they" win...

I'd go. Planning on going there myself too. As you say, the threat level is similar to London and Paris, and you can't sit at home worrying 'what if'.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 13/06/2019 13:13

I'd go, no questions asked.

AlaskanOilBaron · 13/06/2019 13:15

We went a couple of years ago, it was amazing.

PM me if you’d like some suggestions for hotels.

Nearlyadad · 13/06/2019 13:15

I’d take the opinion of the Home Office over internet strangers.

It’s a great country

fiydwi · 13/06/2019 13:17

It’s beautiful!! Just go and have a lovely time.
I went 10 years ago and would love to go back x

londonschool · 13/06/2019 13:29

I'm going in August.

ladyratterley · 13/06/2019 13:45

I am feeling reassured I'm NBU, thanks all.
Nearlyadad some friends & family have made me feel like I'm an idiot to think about going there, so I just wanted to check the general consensus!

I think I'd go. It's quite a nice country and actually was my favourite for food. The hotels aren't as good as some other places. A lot of poverty staring you in the face too. I think somewhere like Bali could be nicerand also offers a range of culture, nature + their spa services are amazing so an extra good option for a honeymoon.

ladyratterley · 13/06/2019 14:02

We've been to Kerala, Goa & Mumbai & absolutely love India. Sri Lanka is similar so I don't think the poverty & standard of hotels would be such a problem for us either (although that sounds awful, I think you know what I mean).
Our schedule includes hotels on the fancier end of the scale. Places like this.. www.resort98acres.com/
We're not as keen on Bali for various reasons but thanks for the suggestion!

We went in April. PM me if you want the contact details of a travel guide we used. Included driver etc. One of my favourite places in the world

BusterTheBulldog · 13/06/2019 14:04

We went in Dec, and it is the most beautiful, interesting place! The people are so, so nice too, felt awful for them following the attacks. I would also go too!

Autumn101 · 13/06/2019 14:06

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with lovely people. I would go

JoJoSM2 · 13/06/2019 14:25

If you were ok in India, then Sri Lanka definitely won't be a problem.

JagerPlease · 13/06/2019 14:29

I would definitely go, I loved Sri Lanka, also travelled to Mumbai about the same amount of time after the terrorist attacks there. As you say, sadly these things happen in many places that people don't think twice about visiting in Europe, so I wouldn't view Asia any differently in terms of threat

Lozz22 · 13/06/2019 14:40

I'd still go. Terrorist attacks are happening all over the world now and if we all stop going places because of it none of us would travel anywhere ever again. That said however as much as I have always wanted to go to Israel it isn't really a place I would feel safe going to
