To think my toothbrush should last more than 5 years?

Sadly I've had to add to landfill and buy a new Sonicare because my one has stopped charging! I'm cross.

It's cost me money and I feel like it's a total waste!

My Braun Oral B is now comfortably into its second decade and doing fine.

I did have a Phillips Sonicare one at one point. It packed up within the return period so returned it was.

They're sealed battery devices. Batteries die - it's intrinsic in their chemistry. Newer batteries are better though.

SpoonBlender · 13/06/2019 12:36

Remember to recycle it properly.

ChocChocButtons · 13/06/2019 15:59

Put it in a small electrical recycling bin, the heads go to landfill anyway.

onemouseplace · 13/06/2019 16:08

My sonicare stopped charging over the weekend - I've had it about 3 years. Replaced it with the cheapest version and it definitely doesn't feel as good quality as previous ones, in fact it feels very underpowered. The only reason I've replaced it is that I'd only just ordered a job lot of replacement heads.

Weathergirl1 · 13/06/2019 16:13

Terracycle actually do recycle toothbrushes now (including the heads from electric ones).

Knitclubchatter · 13/06/2019 16:25

We switched back to regular toothbrushes. Change them every 6months or more often if a cold or flu go through the house.
I’m dubious as to how electronics are recycled. Hate the idea of our garbage shipped off shore to be picked through by child slaves.

NerdyBird · 13/06/2019 17:40

My braun electric toothbrush is still going, prob for over 10 years! I did think it had broken once, but it turned out the fuse in the 2-pin adaptor had gone (don't have a 2-pin socket in bathroom).
Check the fuse in adaptor/socket or your charger first!

noleftturn · 13/06/2019 17:53

@Knitclubchatter way more plastic if you're only using it for 6 months

Kiwiinkits · 13/06/2019 18:03

More crap going to landfill. Depressing. I don’t have a solution for it though. We use bamboo brushes but they only last a month before they go a bit mouldy Confused

Knitclubchatter · 13/06/2019 18:17

You change the heads on the electrics every 6 months or less don’t you?? We did...

IWantMyHatBack · 13/06/2019 18:23

Lol at bamboo electric toothbrushes 😂

Kiwiinkits · 13/06/2019 18:26

The bamboo ones aren’t electric, they’re your bog-standard move-your-arm-back-and-forward ones Wink

Madcats · 13/06/2019 18:32

I reckon we get about 4 years' of brushing out of a sonicare though, because we all shoot off in different directions during the year, we have a brush each (and probably only share a base if we all go on holiday together).

We tend to spend about £30-40 on a model when we happen to spot it on sale in Boots or Amazon.

herculepoirot2 · 13/06/2019 18:37

IWantMyHatBack

Or she could just buy a normal bamboo toothbrush, rather than an electric plastic toothbrush that uses loads of energy?

IWantMyHatBack · 13/06/2019 19:31

Oh they aren't electric?

..

HmmHmmHmm

IWantMyHatBack · 13/06/2019 19:32

Mumsnet is the weirdest place sometimes. Who knew toothbrushes could cause so much angst and so many stroppy comments 😂

IWantMyHatBack · 13/06/2019 19:34

@Kiwiinkits

Haha, no shit 😂

Debenhamshandtowel · 13/06/2019 19:46

I have a panda who comes around. The house twice a day to stadium still with a brush on her hand while I move my mouth back and forth.

Gin.

Shit day he office

ALongHardWinter · 13/06/2019 19:47

Bloody hell! For a moment there I thought you were going to say a manual toothbrush! I was going to say I thought it was recommended that you change it every 3 months! Grin

llangennith · 13/06/2019 20:36

Batteries can't be charged an infinite number of times. There's a limit to the amount of times batteries can be recharged. Like your mobile phone battery.
Buy a cheaper electric toothbrush. My basic Braun has lasted 6 years, so far.

noleftturn · 13/06/2019 22:14

Then allow batteries to be changed. Problem solved
