Would you do this?

Donate towards over 75's free TV licenses?

No

Deadlysinner · 12/06/2019 18:43

My mum gave her heating allowance to her best friend who's several years younger as my mum didn't need the free money but the friend did.

Bezalelle · 12/06/2019 18:43

Would I fuck! Most over-75s I know are rolling in it.

IsabellaLinton · 12/06/2019 18:44

I think it should be means-tested.

trinity0097 · 12/06/2019 18:44

I don’t agree with people getting a benefit like this just due to an age. It’s why child benefit was changed, to benefit those that needed more support, not comfortably off families.

REDCARBLUE · 12/06/2019 18:45

No. I just manage to live as it is. They are not my priority.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/06/2019 18:45

Did he give his salary to those that lost child benefit when they stopped giving that to everyone?

Stunn · 12/06/2019 18:46

Nah mate.

ginghamstarfish · 12/06/2019 18:48

No, but I guess he can afford the gesture. There was another thread on this and most responses seemed to agree with the decision to stop giving it free to ALL over 75s. The licence fee is outrageously high for anyone though. Should be thoroughly investigated - they must make such a lot by selling programmes all round the world, plus to Netflix, to Amazon, but the actual UK licence payer can't see them on iPlayer after 30 days - even though you paid for them to be made.

ScrewBalls99 · 12/06/2019 18:49

Are over 75's his fan base?

Supposedly. Although you can have two earners in the household, be ‘comfortably off’ and receive it, and one earner in the household earning, not so ‘comfortably off’ and receive nothing. Nothing fair about that.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/06/2019 18:52

Child benefit is not fair at all - 1 earner earning 60k can’t get it- 2 earners earning 40k each do qualify!

mimimoo22 · 12/06/2019 18:58

Nope all over 75 I know have more money than I will probably ever have!

MrsAJ27 · 12/06/2019 18:59

No bloody way

Sennedd · 12/06/2019 19:02

Sometimes the machinery for means testing costs too much or so they say. In Wales everyone has free prescriptions. I mentioned that I thought they should be means tested to our doctor and she said it would cost too much. I am sure something can be done though. Young people with good jobs can’t afford to buy a house. It seems crazy. I know someone who has just had a whole new central heating system paid for and installed for free. They can afford to pay.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 12/06/2019 19:03

I would love to have to money to say Yes! As it is though, no, we struggle as it is without paying for others.

Whydoesitalwaysdothis · 12/06/2019 19:04

No. However my grandmother wasn't well off and I remember she struggled to pay the TV licence on her pension. I think it should be means tested. There's nothing on it to watch anyway these days.

HollowTalk · 12/06/2019 19:05

I think it will be means tested, won't it? If they get pension credit they will continue to get it free.

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 12/06/2019 19:07

Nope! I refuse to pay for my own so no way would I pay someone else’s. They can get Netflix if they are so concerned

justanswerthephone · 12/06/2019 19:09

No. It's going to be means tested. Nothing wrong with that.

ilovesooty · 12/06/2019 19:11

No. If someone claims pension credit they're eligible for a free licence.

ComeBackBarack · 12/06/2019 19:13

The 30 day iPlayer thing is an ofcom rule to do with competition. They are consulting on changing it to a year.

But it should be means tested.

Nanny0gg · 12/06/2019 19:18

Did you know that for every three who claim pension credits, 2 don't?

What makes you think that those who are not entitled to PC can afford the TV licence?

I don't think it should be free to all but it's going to be devastating for many old people living on their own who only have the TV and radio for company

EmmaGrundyForPM · 12/06/2019 19:18

I see no reason why over 75s should get it free regardless of income. Tying it to pension credit seems far more sensible.

Weirdpenguin · 12/06/2019 19:19

People claiming pension credit still get free license. Many over 75s have more money than young families. (Said as an older person) Also 2WW veterans are now 90+
