To think there's a rat somewhere in our house?

Someone please tell me I'm being utterly fucking U! Because I'm freaking out and I'm terrified of rats.

Back story - DP is a nightmare for Leaving carrier bags of rubbish on the kitchen floor.

Last week I was downstairs online at night and heard a bag rustling in the kitchen. Thought nothing of it but it carried on, really sounded as though somebody was rifling through it.

Shouted DP to investigate but couldn't find the reason for this noise.

Fast forward to tonight I've just done downstairs to get a bottle for DS and the binbag is opened (it wasn't before we went up to bed).

AIBU to think we must have a rat!? I can't think of anything else that could be causing this.

I'm terrified of them and my DP is being useless because he doesn't like them either!

Argh Sad

Definately sounds like something is coming in. Mice are alot more common to get in a house. Saying that though, rats are obviously bigger and noisier. So if the rustling was loud then it could possibly be a rat. I would look for droppings and also avoid leaving rubbish in the kitchen overnight especially if theres food items in there. Also avoid leaving food on the counter, fruits etc. I would also call in oest control asap!

Buy a chain or some form of lockable storage for your bin like this www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CC9PWDT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_2vrbDb6VZ1QJ0?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Then keep your rubbish outside where it belongs.

Try a trap with peanut butter on as bait you can pick up humane ones from bnm or the range for a couple of quid.

Once had a few mice come into the house from a hole in the wall right the way under our kitchen unit. Most unpleasant. Felt like buying a pair of stilts to walk round in
