Would you buy used underwear for your dc?

DaanSaaf · 11/06/2019 22:30

There's a man on my local fb selling page advertising used girls underwear age 2-3 years.
I buy a lot of second hand clothes for my dc (and myself) but would never buy underwear and I'm wondering genuinely who would.

I actually felt a bit sick at the thought of who would be buying them and want to know if I'm being unreasonable.

Sounds to me like one of life’s innocents. Don’t report him. Message him and gently point out that his actions are open to different kinds of interpretation and it might be better if he removed those items

NauseousMum · 11/06/2019 22:52

I wouldn't buy it but thankfully we had a load handed down which i washed. Given my ds just hates pooing on the potty, it's handy having a surplus.

We hand down used underwear to DD’s cousin who is potty training.
I wouldn’t buy it unless it was Scrundies. I did use cloth nappies for a while and did buy second hand so not squeamish. I think it’s that most shop bought undies don’t wash that well anyway and they’re dead cheap in Primarni so what’s the point?

DaanSaaf · 11/06/2019 23:02

Just looked for the post and it's gone. Hopefully someone pointed out the possibility of them ending up in the wrong hands and he removed it. Thanks all.

My initial thought was urgh no I wouldn't by dc second hand underwear BUT they all had accidents in nursery so they've worn donated undies and I've donated outgrown pants to school/nursery before.

Also, dd is an ex gymnast and had a lovely collection of leotards which included some second hand ones so I suppose it's the same thing. There's also lots of buying and selling of second hand leotards which you can't be sure has never been worn without knickers.

I'm this case though, I think the seller is genuine but the buyer may not be...

SkintAsASkintThing · 11/06/2019 23:07

Well it's 1000 times less ick than buying second hand nappies. I've never bought second hand undies, but have had them in second hand clothing bundles or clothes that have been passed on.

Let's face it, youre creeped out because it's a man selling them. If it was a woman you wouldn't he posting.

Grow up.

SkintAsASkintThing · 11/06/2019 23:12

Out of interest I've just typed knickers into the search bar on my Facebook and dozens of posts came up of piles of kids old undies for sale. They must all be undercover pervs 🙄

BettyUnderswoob · 11/06/2019 23:17

I bought a bag of (clean) knickers at a jumble sale when one of my DDs was potty training. Cost me 20p

If there was a messy accident I could chuck them out and they each cost about 1.5p

Saracen · 11/06/2019 23:20

Well, though I am happy to receive underwear hand-me-downs, I never have bought it secondhand, on the grounds that it's very cheap new anyway.

However, I've been having a rethink lately in terms of environmental damage, and I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable with my throwaway lifestyle. It does seem unduly finicky to throw away usable clothing. It's perfectly hygienic once washed.

user27495824 · 11/06/2019 23:22

There is a big market for second hand cloth nappies AND second hand cloth San pro. Underwear, and cloth nappies doesn't bother me. I've bought and sold many cloth nappies. I bought cloth San pro maternity pads and I couldn't bring myself to buy second hand ones.

EmeraldShamrock · 11/06/2019 23:27

No never.
I would never sell a childs pre-worn underwear, I'd be weary of a peado buying them.

Vivavivienne · 11/06/2019 23:29

I haven’t, but I’m another person wondering why it’s so different to buying second hand cloth nappies or cloth san pro. Both of which had big established markets... the former especially.

I don’t think he’s a weirdo. And as for the “falling into the wrong hands”’thing.... don’t you think a Peado would just go and buy a pack if that was their thing?

CherryPavlova · 11/06/2019 23:33

It’s articles of clothing so I can’t see a problem but I never have. I do still find various underwear with other young people’s names in them from boarding and initial military training when everything had sewn in labels. I think there was fairly communal use amongst both groups.

SirVixofVixHall · 11/06/2019 23:38

I pass on immaculate Petit Bateau vest sets. (When they have been barely worn) .I have also been given the odd hand me down of underwear. I don’t find it strange if they are in a virtually new state. I have sent some hardly worn sets to the charity shop too, they are so expensive, seems mad to bin them. I bin anything that looks tired.

NotSoThinLizzy · 11/06/2019 23:40

I won't buy used swimming costumes either for the same reason

jennymanara · 11/06/2019 23:43

Oh come on how naive to you have to be to think this is anything other than a pervert selling and buying?

Anarchyshake · 11/06/2019 23:47

We've received second hand pants before. My eldest has SEN and had particularly big trouble with poo accidents. So we were happy to have people's seconds because we often had to throw pants away due to the nature of her movements (the medication she had for it made them awful and the smell didn't come out...).

We've done seconds in cloth nappies, clothes including pants, and cloth sanpro.

My friend makes bespoke pants and they're so popular they have a resale value too.

It is possible that someone dodgy might buy the second hand toddler pants, and that's gruesome. But getting the most wear out of clothes is sensible, specially when we have washing machines and all manner of detergents these days. It's just ruining the earth to throw everything away and buy new.

Leeds2 · 11/06/2019 23:47

I wouldn't buy second hand underwear for my DC, no.

But when I used to volunteer in a charity shop, the nearly new bras (particularly in larger sizes) were one of the best sellers.

omafiet · 11/06/2019 23:51

Well, I can't imagine that they haven't been washed. I will say that I've given bundles of clothes to charity stores and included lots of used underwear, but washed and in great condition. I wouldn't necessarily ascribe it to nefarious intentions.

DaftHannah · 11/06/2019 23:59

A friend gave me a load of hand me down clothes from her youngest who was 2 years older than my DS. Lots of pyjamas, school clothes and it included some underwear.

This was a long time ago, but I wore hand me downs as a kid, so not proud and we were skint at the time. After a 60 degree wash they came up a treat and were appreciated.

My parents generation would never have thrown anything serviceable away which could used by others in the wider family circle. If no children in the house who might wear clothes and underwear they went to younger cousins or friends children.

Looking back at old photos from our primary school in the 1960s, many of us kids were dressed this way. My parents complained bitterly at having to buy all new stuff when I went to the Grammar School. No-one else in the family was able to contribute old clothing and it cost them a fortune.

FannyFeatures · 12/06/2019 00:09

I've seen lots of sellers on our local FB page advertising underwear as part of bundles, it's never occurred to me that there was anything sinister about it.

Would you have thought about paedophiles if it was a woman posting?

I give my own kids outgrown underwear to the school/nursery and they've worn from there on occasion so it doesn't bother me but then we used mostly second hand cloth nappies and cloth pads too so 🤷‍♀️

SadMummy54321 · 12/06/2019 00:23

I think if you're in the habit of selling your family's secondhand children's clothes and nappies then you wouldn't think twice about selling underwear too. I see it come up on my local Facebook group. We've used loads of secondhand reuseable nappies. Cleaning out so many pooey stains from your own kids, I just stopped thinking about other baby poops! And it just goes to show that everything can be washed! I can see why people might be wary but I can also totally see a dad trying to off load clothes and save some pennies.

user1471582494 · 12/06/2019 01:14

I'll never buy my children used underwear. you can buy new ones so cheaply why would you? Gross

BohemianDream · 12/06/2019 01:26

This is odd. I would send a message to the man. I hope its just a case of him being totally naive but I'd definitely remind him that there are creeps everywhere. Wording it may be a bit difficult but In my opinion it has to be said. Sorry to make you feel worse.
