Sounds like grating and a fog horn about 30 seconds after I flush the loo?

AIBU to think there is something wrong with the plumbing?
This all started about 2 weeks ago. I'm sure it echoes through the block. Who do I call? It seems to be my toilet causing the noise? Before I got used to it it used to frighten the living daylights out of me as I didn't know what it was. It sounds like a ship coming in to port in my bathroom!
Any plumbing specialists?

You need to call a plumber. Sounds loose or worn out washer inside the fill valve. There are videos online if you want to do it yourself. Personally, I would call the experts!

I would bet it's a loose washer in the ballcock assembly. It needs to be replaced and this is something you can do. I'm not a plumber but I've done tons of plumbing in my house. Most of it far easier than you might think.

It's a council property and all plumbing is undertaken by them. I'll call them tomorrow. The noise is something to behold though. It's not coming FROM my bathroom, it's coming from inside the walls - all over the block I'd say.

Do you know if it's a macerator pump? They go nuts if there's a blockage.

Jonette · 11/06/2019 21:50

I never copped that it was related to me for a few days as it's not immediate after flushing. I only twigged that it was my loo setting it off when I got up to the loo in the middle of the night a few times. It's like a grinding, moaning, fog-horn sound. I'm sure it wakes the entire block. Very odd. If they need to dismantle blooming pipes, I'll sign myself into a mental hospital somewhere (we had no gas for 2 weeks last year and I nearly lost my mind).

Wouldn't have a clue about what pump there is.

We had this, a one point we used to have to put our fingers in or ears, and I stopped people flushing for a wee.

It was the water tank, and something called water hammer

Freddiefox · 11/06/2019 21:55

It was easy to fix, just a new arm thingy in the tank

AntiHop · 11/06/2019 21:57

We had this. It's easily fixed. But contact them asap as it will be driving your neighbours crazy, as it did ours.

Basketofkittens · 11/06/2019 21:57

It could be a demon in the plumbing, best call your call exorcist. Wink

grannybiker · 11/06/2019 22:14

An air lock in the system?

BlackCatsRock · 11/06/2019 22:17

I had this. It's something in the cistern that can easily be fixed by a plumber. They won't need to touch the pipes in the wall. I found that turning on my sink tap when I flushed helped to ease the noise.

StinkinDrink · 11/06/2019 22:23

I had something similar and a very temporary stop on the noise would be to run the tap in the bathroom while the toilet finished flushing, cant remember what was wrong with 🤷‍♀️🙈

Sorry! Cross post!
