To not start new job next week?

I’m meant to start an admin job in the public sector next week. It’s permanent but I don’t want to go now! I feel cold inside when I think about starting there.

I have two interviews next week for teaching assistant jobs. I want to apply to start a PGCE next year (2020).

AIBU to turn down the job? Should I call? Email? DH has a really good job so the money isn’t vital and I’m fortunate that I don’t need to do a job I don’t want to do. I’ve been volunteering as a classroom assistant for the past year and the teachers have encouraged me to do teacher training.

I’ve been a SAHM for a couple of years, before that I was a health and safety advisor but don’t think I want to return to that.

Why did you apply for it if you don't want to do it?

Sparklesocks · 11/06/2019 21:18

If you don’t want the job then nobody can force you. But ultimately it’s your decision and nobody here can decide for you if it’s a good idea or not, you have to do what’s right for you and your family.

I am in a similar position and last year turned down a job in admin I was offered also public sector. Something inside I just wasn't as happy as I should have been.

Please tell them now if you don’t want it. What an incredible waste of time and tax payers money! Recruitment is an expensive & time consuming business (work in HR in the public sector). They’ll probably have a reserve list.

I’ve applied for a few jobs as I want to get back into paid employment. I’m finding that a lot of H&S jobs want a diploma which I don’t have.

And if teaching is my passion it seems a bit mad to go back into office based roles. Just hoping I get one of these TA jobs. If I don’t then I’m back to square one.

Surely it’s better that I don’t start a job I don’t want to do and waste their time?

emma6776 - I hadn’t had the TA interview notifications when I accepted this job. I’ve been a recruiting line manager before and whilst it’s annoying when people drop out, that’s the way of the world. People change their minds and life moves on.

Tell them now if you don't want it. They've already spent time and money recruiting you.

mollpop · 11/06/2019 21:36

If you’re sure you don’t want it, then please just let them know ASAP. If you’re just nervous about starting a new job, then maybe give it a go and see if you enjoy it.

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 11/06/2019 21:36

I agree with Emma. That recruitment is probably taken six months of them being down on staff to get to the point of you joining. Tell them ASAP so they can get someone else

Raver84 · 11/06/2019 21:36

You clearly don't want it so don't waste anymore time and call them tomorrow
