To buy a trampoline for the kids

We’ve seen a trampoline on offer and we’re considering getting one for the garden. I know they’d love it as they’re always on other people’s if they have them but I’m really not sure about it. Kids are still wee so even in summer holidays they’ll not be up really late annoying the neighbours with their bouncing and during the weekdays they’ll be at work.

They just seem a bit faddy and worried about injury too.

We have nevr had one, so feel free to ingore me, but the people I do now who have had one 2 have kept it in their gardens as it is hard to disassemble them or it took them so long to assemble them that they can't be bothered to dismantle it so they permanently have them on their gardens. The third reallised this too late and tried to give it to us but we refused on account of the above as we need the not really big garden for the children to scoot around and play cricket which they can't with a trampoline in the middle.

TheCatDidSay · 11/06/2019 10:44

They are not safe. They are big and baulky people seem to struggle to even give away their now unused ones.

Unless your going to sink it into the ground, making sure the springs are fully protected, keep a strict one person only rule and always supervise then it’s not a good idea. They are made for one person to purely bounce dead centre. No flips etc just bouncing.

Our trampoline is probably the best thing we ever bought for the kids, 8 years on it is still used most days.

We have a net round it and no serious injuries (yet). Over the years we've had to replace the net twice and the spring cushion once, worth doing to keep it all safe.

DaisiesAreOurSilver · 11/06/2019 10:47

Only if you hate your neighbours.

RosaWaiting · 11/06/2019 10:51

it's only okay if your neighbours are really horrible.

CatFaceCats · 11/06/2019 10:54

We’ve got a 12ft one in our garden - have had it 6 years and there’s a child on it most days! There’s a net, and a spring cushion and we’ve had no injuries.
Kids love it!

Pearlfish · 11/06/2019 10:54

My kids love theirs and we’ve got loads of use out of it. I don’t see why it’s annoying for the neighbours as they don’t make more noise trampolining than they do during any other outside game.

However, I do know two kids who have broken a leg on one (just from bouncing, not falling off).

CatFaceCats · 11/06/2019 10:55

And don’t worry about the neighbours, as long as the kids aren’t outside screaming on it 24/7 you’re perfectly entitled to enjoy your garden as you see fit!

TixieLix · 11/06/2019 10:59

We had a quite large one and the kids used it for years. Ours had protective netting round the outside so it kept the kids on the trampoline and would have given the neighbours privacy if I didn't have high bushes either side. You have to be quite strict about not too many on the trampoline at any one time so they don't bump each other. It was also a permanent fixture at the end of the garden as it was too large to dismante/reassemble. One of the most used items we ever bought for our DDs.

WLmum · 11/06/2019 11:01

Best thing we ever bought. Our garden is small so it is quite dominant but being small, there wasn't room for them to run around or play ball games but they use the trampoline loads. I'm just planting up some big pots around it to try to hide it a bit.
Neighbours not disturbed. They aren't any noisier on there than in the garden generally and I always bring them in if they are arguing loudly.

PinkCrayon · 11/06/2019 11:04

Probaby the best thing we have ever bought our kids, we had an expensive wooden frame with a treehouse they barely played on.
I cant really see how they arent safe? They have a net the whole way around them so they cant fall off.
Mine have never hurt themselves on ours.

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 11/06/2019 11:04

We've had a 12 foot for years. It's got a net, and most days has a group of 5+ 10 year old boys having wrestling matches on or perfectly back flips and gainers (whatever the fuck they are). I temporarily removed it last year to do some fencing and there was uproar!

Aprillygirl · 11/06/2019 11:06

We only got rid of our much used trampoline a couple of years ago after getting a good 10 years of good service from it. Despite the near heart attacks it's given me watching the kids doing their somersaults and backflips on it,I can honestly say it's the best thing we ever bought them.Yes there's a risk of injury, but it's also great exercise and loads of fun,and if you are unlucky enough to have grumpy neighbours, sod 'em.

Maddiemademe · 11/06/2019 11:10

I would love one but a doctor friend has warned me off them. They can fall funny on them and even though the risk is small I wouldn’t personally risk a broken leg or neck!

minisoksmakehardwork · 11/06/2019 11:16

Best thing pils and we bought. It's used every dry day. We bought an oval one so it doesn't take up a random amount of the garden. It was a package deal so came with the ladder, safety netting and cover included.

Once up you really are not going to want to be taking it down all the time. The only thing you might need to think about is removing the trampoline bed during winter and high winds as I've seen them flip over and out of gardens. I suspect frost and freezing might damage the trampoline bed as well. Although as I said, mine are out every dry day so cold weather didn't deter them either.

Our dc also have trampolining lessons so they can practise their routines in between.

As long as you are mindful of being out too early or too late, I don't think the noise is any different to children playing in the garden normally. The only difference depends on fence height and whether your children are trying to be nosey - ours is near the house, safety netted and we have trees in the garden so I'd like to think it's not too much bother for one neighbour and is too far away from the others.

Drinkandknowthings · 11/06/2019 11:31

We got a 10ft one 2 weeks ago. My girls LOVE it. My 2 year old wanted to sleep in it when she got tired from bouncing!

It’s an inground one with netting all around so I’m not worried about them falling off. Our garden is pretty big so it just takes up a small corner and we don’t have any neighbors!

BouncingInTheGarden · 13/06/2019 13:54

Thanks all. Seems they very much are a love or hate item!!

We can't get something large like a wooden climbing frame with swings/slide so though it might be good instead. However the sound will go through me too! I'll maybe need to think of some other activities for them to keep them occupied. Unfortunately our garden stays wet for ages after rain so a trampoline would at least keep them a bit drier.
