to think that Rory Stewart is the only normal contender

So we have the final 10 - from tainted, via awful, to frankly terrifying. The only person who seems different is Rory Stewart, though there are a lot of his policies I don’t yet know about. At least he is seeking some kind of consensus though, and doesn’t sound, frankly, as stupid as some of the others.

Don’t know though - none of it feels good. How is it all going to play out?

I actually really like him! I did all my reading on them all last night. He's a poppet. No one would take him seriously of course - because he's a poppet !

longwayoff · 11/06/2019 07:20

I see what you mean, best of a bad bunch, but hardly 'normal'. Is he?

SisterMaryLoquacious · 11/06/2019 07:20

I think “normal” is pushing it a bit.

I do find him likeable, apparently he was well-liked in the prison ministry, and his basic policies of “avoid no deal Brexit” and “I’m not going to slash taxes for the rich at random just to bribe the Tory electorate although it’s not in the best interests of the country” seem sound.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 11/06/2019 07:21

I agree.

He does seem refreshingly sane.

PutOnYourDamnSocks · 11/06/2019 07:23

Everything crossed it’s him. Because if we end up with a choice between Corbyn and Boris, good grief!

???

SellFridges · 11/06/2019 07:30

Define normal.

hopeishere · 11/06/2019 07:32

Oxford (or Cambridge) is not "normal" it's a tiny % of the population.
Tutoring the future King - not an everyday occupation.
Walking across Afghanistan- not normal.

He seems a bit too nice for the role. I think it will be Jeremy Hunt.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 11/06/2019 07:38

Well, I can't get past the biggest display of manspreading I've ever seen. Don't know which channel it was but watching the news last night, I was blinded by the sheer amount of Rory crotch on display during an interview. I'm surprised his trousers didn't split.

Pondlifeandfrog · 11/06/2019 07:44

I like him too.

Writersblock2 · 11/06/2019 07:44

Jesus, I need to sleep more. I read this as Rod Stewart and then got increasingly confused as I read the thread, wondering if he was standing for PM. Worst thing is, it didn’t seem that mad after the likes of Boris. Confused

Pondlifeandfrog · 11/06/2019 07:44

He hasn't got a cat in bell's chance of winning though.

Pondlifeandfrog · 11/06/2019 07:45

Obviously hell's, not bells!

IsabellaLinton · 11/06/2019 07:53

I don’t think he’ll win, unfortunately, but he is very likeable. He comes across as a very nice, decent chap.

DerelictWreck · 11/06/2019 08:04

Jesus let's hope it's not Jeremy Hunt. I rather like my personal liberties and rights.

hopeishere · 11/06/2019 08:16

@HoofWankingSpangleCunt OMG!!! I commented on that to DH as well!!!! His legs were practically at 180 degrees!!!!!

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 11/06/2019 08:19

How long till someone namechanges to RodStewartForPM?

That's what I want to know.

goodbyestranger · 11/06/2019 08:27

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_Stewart

No none of this is normal in the sense that lots of people are DC of diplomats/ go to Eton/ Oxford etc but his CV is seriously impressive and he seems seriously likeable: 'normal' in the sense of being down to earth and sensible despite his achievements and intellect. Boris is really not very clever at all, he just likes to affect cleverness using flowery language - we probably need a clever person at the moment and a diplomatic background wouldn't come amiss.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 11/06/2019 08:29

Haha hopeishere I know, right?! Great minds and all that Grin
Imagine if he'd been on a sofa and not constrained by the sides of the chair. He'd be doing the splits Grin
Sorry to derail this thread!

Unicorn, that’s a vile thing to say, whatever you think about Gove and the other one.

historysock · 11/06/2019 08:49

Best of a bad lot.
I heard someone promoting Boris Johnson on the radio this morning-it made me really angry. How can he seriously be the front runner in all of this? Some of the things he's done are just indefensible. I can't get my head around it at all.

Marylou2 · 11/06/2019 08:52

Really impressed by Rory Stewart. Quite frankly I don’t want someone “normal” running the country. I’d prefer someone with a top notch education and an impressive CV. He sounded thoughtful and measured.

Reallybadidea · 11/06/2019 08:53

He's rather more 'normal' than the two offering from the adoption agency/care system. (Gove and McVey)

If you think that is an acceptable thing to say then you are not normal.
