Fuck I think I’ve killed it although I’m not sure how...
we got it yesterday, I’ve had hamsters growing up and had no issues. We got him from pets at home. He seemed lively enough and friendly in the pet shop.
We got him home and he ran round his cage for a bit and then went to bed... and didn’t get back up. They said to leave him alone but I’ve just checked on him as I was worried and he’s cold and won’t come round properly? Is that it? Have I killed him after 24 hours? He’s really cold. That’s what’s worrying me. Yesterday when they woke him up so we could buy him he came round really quickly and was running around but he won’t wake up properly and it’s 8pm so you’d think he’d be coming round a bit. I don’t think he’s eaten or had anything to drink either since we had him.

If he's cold, he sounds dead

Sorry

Ivekilledthehamster · 10/06/2019 19:57

No he’s not dead. He’s breathing.

If he is cold and stiff he is dead. If you can still move his limbs he might be in torpor - this article will help.

Warm him up! They hibernate, if he’s got cold he might have gone into hibernation...

Ivekilledthehamster · 10/06/2019 20:00

No he’s definitely not dead...more dying perhaps.
How can I have killed it after only a day?!

OP posts:
Ivekilledthehamster · 10/06/2019 20:01

Pets at home told us about wet tail where basically they get stressed... and die. Is that what has happened to my hamster?
All the hamsters I had growing up were affable and never seemed stressed or got wet tail.

GhengisCalm · 10/06/2019 20:01

Get him out and try to warm him up, if he is cold he maybe hibernating.

Ivekilledthehamster · 10/06/2019 20:02

I’m not sure... if he’s stressed will getting him out and messing him around make it worse?
He shouldn’t be cold. He lives in the house. It is 20 degrees in my house.

He can’t be stiff because he’s dead if he’s breathing. Cup him in your hands to try an warm him.

MrsJBaptiste · 10/06/2019 20:05

We got a hamster 3 months ago and she sleeps soooo much! Now it's so light in the evenings, it can be 9.30pm before she's up and moving about. Even then she'll often move around and then have another doze before she's on her wheel and running around like a look.

I'm sure yours is ok, maybe just acclimatising to the new home? 🐁

Imustbemad00 · 10/06/2019 20:05

We hardly saw our hamster for the first month. He was terrified. Literally never came out, until I assume, we were all asleep. I knew he’d been out but never saw him and was worrying about how we would tame him if he wouldn’t even come out when we were around. But he’s fine now.
You should put him in a quiet room and leave him alone for a few days when you first get him. Don’t wake him up or bother him

MrsJBaptiste · 10/06/2019 20:06

^ like a loon

Ivekilledthehamster · 10/06/2019 20:07

He doesn’t look right. I don’t know. He came round really fast yesterday when she got him out but he’s just not coming round. He’s kind of hunched up.

OP posts:
Pringlefan · 10/06/2019 20:08

Leave him along he’s just in a v.deep sleep from all the excitement of moving home. Some hamsters don’t wake up until gone midnight. Don’t wake him up, just leave him be.

Toffeecakes · 10/06/2019 20:09

Is the cage in a draft? When they get cold they hibernate. Move the cage somewhere warm and noisy, if he doesn’t rouse then warm him in a towel.

Pringlefan · 10/06/2019 20:10

It’s too late for the vet now (unless you’re worried enough for out of hours?) so I’d leave him alone at least until morning, if he hasn’t moved by then- vet.

Ivekilledthehamster · 10/06/2019 20:10

I hope so. I hope that’s all it is.
I’m pretty sure he hasn’t been out to eat or drink. Food looks untouched.

OP posts:
Thegoodandbadlife · 10/06/2019 20:20

Sounds like he’s potentially going to hibernation. It’s pretty common for this and death to be very similar in appearance in hamsters. Get a hot water bottle and wrap in in a couple of towels etc and place the hamster on top to warm him up. May take some time but should help.

SchooledUp · 10/06/2019 20:20

Make sure he's out of any drafts, put a radiator on higher near him if you can, put lots of nesting bedding in his cage (can leave it well away from him, don't poke him about), put some treats in his cage and then completely leave him, see if the treats are gone in the morning.

SchooledUp · 10/06/2019 20:21

Please don't move him somewhere noisy, he needs peace while he acclimatises, just make sure he's somewhere warm.

Ivekilledthehamster · 10/06/2019 20:22

He’s plenty of hay in there and he’s in his little house bit. It definitely shouldn’t be too cold for him.

OP posts:
SchooledUp · 10/06/2019 20:23

If he's from pets at home he's likely relatively young, not starting a fight about PaH there just that he'll be easier to scare and take more time to acclimatise.

Ivekilledthehamster · 10/06/2019 21:55

I’ve moved it by the radiator but I’m 99% it’s going to die.
I can’t believe I’ve killed it already. Poor little thing.

OP posts:
Ivekilledthehamster · 10/06/2019 21:56

Pretty sure it won’t make it til morning. Don’t think a vet would do much with it. Doesn’t seem distressed it’s just asleep.

OP posts:
Madnessonestepbeyond · 10/06/2019 22:00

Dont worry.... my hamster committed suicide.

Bedding, I would often shred kitchen roll or clean jiffy cloth and put in the cage for the hamster to use as bedding.

Hope he is ok
