Looking at extension/kitchen ideas as I will need a downstairs bedroom + bathroom in the near future. Very modest budget and 3 bed semi. Plans I've looked at for kitchens etc all very nice but where do all the boring things like vacuum cleaner and mops go?? Im not a naturally tidy person so definitely need a place to hide my stuff lol

We had an understairs cupboard built in which divided the triangular space into sections. The largest section is for the vacuum and ironing board etc .
It looks a bit like this and is very useful for all of the boring stuff that needs to be kept nearby.

We put in a bank of tall, floor to ceiling units on one side of the kitchen. One of them is 40cm wide with two high shelves for cleaning supplies. The bottom part holds mops, steam vac and vacuum cleaner. We put a socket in the back to keep the vacuum charged.

Ohhhh that's very organised magicstar love the socket idea! I'm never been in a position for whatever reason to have EXACTLY what I want (budget allowing) total brain fart about it lol

It’s very handy alright. Take your time planning...the Ikea site has a great app for planning out the room. I changed mine around about 20 times before I was happy.
Here’s a pic of my units...all the storage means the rest of the kitchen doesn’t need any wall units and feels much more open.

That is stunning 😍 would probably have to scale mine down a bit but definitely would work for me, I'm a bit fed up of going to other people's houses and wondering where all the stuff is , I am constantly surrounded by stuff lol

I keep my stuff in the utility room. Prior to having a utility room I had a floor to ceiling cupboard in the corner of the kitchen that housed my Hoover and mop etc. Maybe that is something you could incorporate into your kitchen?

Pjsandbaileys · 09/06/2019 13:14

I have a sectioned off bit of a lean too that I use as "utility" atm it has to go to make way for my bathroom. Probably not a lot of money by mumsnet standards but would be devastated to get I wrong

All that stuff goes in my large understairs cupboard. If you don't have one get some sort of cupboard built in with the extension. Nobody wants to look at clutter like that. I also have a floor to ceiling cupboard built into a gap by the Woodburner that I keep things like the toolbox in.

CakeNinja · 09/06/2019 13:21

We built a utility when we designed our extension.
It’s where the washing machine and tumble dryer live, along with a sink for soaking stuff (I have never soaked a single thing but it’s useful for emptying the tumble dryer drawer into!). Then there’s a tall cupboard where the cordless hoover is plugged in, the ironing board gathers dust, a small bin for emptying the Hoover and the tumble dryer filter etc is fitted to the door, the karcher window vac thing (used once!), the floor steamer and then there’s some shelves above with things like spare filters for the Hoover and kettle, extra bin bags and kitchen roll, shopping bags, hand towels for the downstairs loo, extra rinse aid/dishwasher tablets/washing up liquid, batteries, lightbulbs - all that sort of crap which is useful but you want out of the way.

Aggghhhhhh this is so hard lol I may have to rejig plans to include a small utility I soooooo what to be Mrs Hitch but I'm not I live in a pigsty and complain 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Dyson in the front porch, ironing board in the airing cupboard up stairs, mop and bucket in the garage so I can forget about it for weeks. We really do lack storage space.

CakeNinja · 09/06/2019 19:16

If you can fit one it at the expense of losing a small amount of kitchen space, it’s totally worth it. Ours is tiny, but for the sake of being able to shut the door on the noise of the washing machine and tumble dryer and having somewhere to dump lots of crap it’s totally worth it.

This is exactly what I did in my lovely new kitchen

I have a broom cupboard in my kitchen, next to the pull-out larder and same height. It can take a broom and a pucket with mop, and has a shelf a bit above bucket height for the hoover to sit on.

I do have an under-stairs cupboard too, which has the ironing board, shopper trolley, and needs some thought to make the bottom of the triangle shape useful - the door is at the high end and there's a radiator along the wall which can't be moved.
