AIBU to pay for my PAC code?

I want to upgrade my phone... have had the current one for many years and it’s showing it’s age. I’m on a SIM only contract until September. AIBU to pay the £45 exit charge now so I can get my new phone now? New contract has no upfront cost, loads more data and about £15 per month cheaper than the equivalent contract my current provider can offer! They didn’t even try to match it!

What do you mean pay for your PAC code?

bridgetreilly · 09/06/2019 11:09

Well it depends whether you've got that money spare or not. September really isn't that far away, so I'd probably wait, but £45 is quite a lot to me.

Angeldust747 · 09/06/2019 11:35

How much is your sim only contract? If its 15 a month or less then keep paying it and just get the new one?

Gth1234 · 09/06/2019 22:52

you mean pay out your existing contract?

So you are paying £15/month - and your no contract will be quite a bit more, no doubt. I would wait, personally.

Mind you, won't your existing supplier match the deal? Do they do the phone you want to buy?

Horsemenoftheaclopalypse · 10/06/2019 07:46

If it’s sim only, just buy a new handset and keep the sim. They get a new payg sim in September, No pac code needed.

Buying a handset is cheaper if you can afford it upfront. I am assuming you can as people on more expensive contacts just upgrade every year/2years (ie you would not have an old handset)

ThePants999 · 10/06/2019 08:03

Unless you're currently going over your data allowance and hence paying extra, just be patient and save your money.

Skittlesss · 10/06/2019 08:05

I would pay it. I’m thinking of doing the same as Vodafone’s upgrade offers are atrocious.

RezCowgirl · 10/06/2019 08:06

You can pay to get out of your current contract but you don't pay for a PAC code.

BarbaraofSevillle · 10/06/2019 08:12

You could also look at how much it costs to buy your new phone outright (look for an interest free credit card offer if you can't/don't want to pay for the phone all in one go) and look for a new Sim Only deal separately in September. It's rarely cheaper to take a combined phone/service contract.

RedSheep73 · 10/06/2019 08:26

If you are on a sim only contract, why are you trying to change contract now? just get a new phone stick the sim in it!

Collaborate · 10/06/2019 08:33

As you'll be saving more than £45 by making the change of course it's the right thing to do.

recommendation

Motorola g7 plus - £20 a month unlimited calls/texts 2Gb data. Vodafone from Carphone Express. Great phone for the money.

We just changed our phones (out of contract) and got two of these. I think a good deal WITH a phone is probably cheaper than buying a separate handset.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2019 14:36

They get a new payg sim in September, No pac code needed.

Don't you need a PAC to keep your number?

Gth1234 · 11/06/2019 16:19

Don't you need a PAC to keep your number?

yes, but not on the same network - which is so stupid. You go to carphone warehouse, find a phone you like, but you can't get it without changing network.
