Aibu to think Chinese lanterns have been banned or am I imagining it?

If not can someone point me in the direction to what shop I can buy them from that's not online?

We are planning to set them off in someones memory and do not have time to order offline.

Of course if iambu then I will not do this but could anyone recommend something else to do for someone's memory for a little girl to do something for her nanny? Thank you

I’m not sure if they have been banned but please don’t do it. They look lovely for a minute or so when you set them off but then they are just litter - dangerous to farm animals, wildlife and marine life if they come down in a waterway. Not really the lovely positive vibe you are aiming for when doing it in someone’s memory.

@Pigglypig thanks for your reply. Will definitely do something different then. Any ideas you have in mind by any chance?

You can get biodegradable ones. I wouldn’t let them off in dry season, otherwise I would

Plant a tree or some flowers
Throw some flowers into a running stream and watch them whoosh away
Throw a seed bomb
Blow giant bubbles together
Write a message on flying wish paper and watch it float upwards

We used to use rizlas instead of flying wish paper!

SprintingStreaker · 09/06/2019 03:05

Rizlas work just as well but flying wish paper has prettier colours and sounds a bit more magical Grin

If you Google alternatives to Chinese lanterns it comes up with environmental pages who have lists of suggestions. Lanterns are not environmentally friendly, even the biodegradable ones take years to break down and meanwhile they are a risk to wildlife, livestock and have been known to cause fires. You could use static lanterns, or light candles?

To answer your question there's no outright ban (yet) but some local authorities have banned them.
