To think we'll just get more mice?

Intermittent mouse problem in our kitchen, have even found droppings in our stove Angry

DS is an only child and would like cat. Would like one, but will it only bring more in? The presence of mice really upsets me and don't want to make things worse!

"What do you mean other cats catch things to eat? Hahaha. I just send human to pets at home for the GOOD food" Grin

It all depends on the cat really I suppose which you can't tell until you get it. You can have my tom cat and then you'll just get your neighbours underwear 😂

Alicatz66 · 08/06/2019 22:22

Seriously .. get a cat .. a big boy cat .. you will never ever have a mouse in your house again !!! I love cats .. twice in my life I've had brief periods without a cat in the house ... stuff in my garage and shed chewed up and mice have made nests ... best and most efficient pest control is a kitty 🐱

Orangehandtowel · 08/06/2019 22:33

I thought my cat was lazy until he brought me a deconstructed pigeon... Leaving pieces of the poor bird around the house.
No live mice though

poglets · 08/06/2019 22:39

Same problem here.

We have become meticulous about storage and rubbish. We have off site underground rubbish bins which we use every day. This deters the mice. We also pack all food away in airtight containers that they can't access. This really helped.

Such a mix of experiences!

Perhaps asking for an indoor cat at a rescue shelter is the solution

If you want a mouser get a farm cat. PIL live in the countryside and there are often farm cat litters, the farmers keep cats in the yard to keep the rodents at bay, but they don't always neuter meaning more kittens than they need. PIL have two and they are astounding I've seen them leap at birds from the fence and one killed a rabbit (wild). If they do bring anything back it's well and truly dead and often it's just a part left on the patio. They keep their cat flap set to out only, so the cats ask to come in.

OrganisedKitchenDraws · 09/06/2019 02:51

Op please deal with the mouse situation. If you have one, you probably have about 30 of them by now. They can get through things the size of the end of a pen.
Call a pest control company or be prepared to empty your entire house of anything they may find edible and replace it all incredibly frequently.
Then, stop them getting back in.

givemesteel · 09/06/2019 03:11

Was also going suggest rescue indoor cat, there are cats you have to keep in for various reasons, eg FIV virus which is harmless to humans but could siread to other cats.

Have two indoor cats, never had mice in our house. Could be a coincidence.

But parents did have nice in their house, they took other measures as well (eg wrapping food etc), but the cats stayed at their house for a couple of weeks and the mice never returned, no poison or traps. Again could be a coincidence or the other measures they took,so not saying a cat would solve the problem. You need to want a cat regardless of the mouse issue.

Mine don't get the opportunity to bring anything in, I have no cat flap so they come in when I open the door to them. Which doesn't happen when ones stood there with a (always dead) mouse in its mouth.
They bring home dead mice because they think we are rubbish hunters and need feeding. Kinda cute but so gross. Dead baby birds is the worst :(

Babdoc · 09/06/2019 08:49

I’m surprised that PPs cats have tolerated having their cat flap locked to “in” only. My DD’s cat took exception to having her flap locked at night to keep her indoors - she carefully chewed off the control knob, leaving the flap swinging free!
My own cat, despite a free cat flap, often raps on the patio door and shouts at me to open it for her - usually as a ruse to get me off the sofa and steer me to her food bowl...!

Babdoc · 09/06/2019 08:50

Oops, meant “out” only, obvs!

LimitIsUp · 09/06/2019 08:53

I get field mice (rural). It can be difficult to identify where they are getting in as only the tiniest gap is required.

Don't rush into getting a cat, mice traps work well - I load with chocolate buttons

Animum2 · 09/06/2019 09:27

The block I live in has a mouse problem and when I had my previous cat, we rarely saw any (maybe the mice could smell her) then she died in November last year and about a month after are died they started appearing, we caught about 7 in one weekend, then we got another cat in January and we've only seen 1 which he tore two pieces and brought to dh

Animum2 · 09/06/2019 09:29

To add, we can hear them in the skirting board mostly when the weather is a bit colder, they just seem to run amok throughout the various voids within the building

makingmammaries · 09/06/2019 13:42

Male cats are supposed to be better hunters. Ours is ace, he leaves us dead mice on the doormat and once left us half a rat.

We did it! Last week we bought home Olive from our local shelter. We are so in love with her!

Blondebakingmumma · 15/07/2019 17:09

My old cat (RIP gorgeous boy) used to kill mice. Now he’s gone the mice are back 😔

Alicatz66 · 24/07/2019 17:33

I officially adopted my foster boy Theo today !!!!!
He's a big ginger bruiser and we receive many mouse gifts !!!

To think we'll just get more mice?
Itsgettingbetter · 24/07/2019 20:06

This is Olive!

Her favourite toy is a pink mouse with which she practices hunting Smile

I’m hoping the traces of her presence in the homs will warn off rodents as opposed to having to deal with their dead bodies
