To say be careful with tea

user87382294757 · 08/06/2019 17:20

I had no idea it could cause such a scald. Maybe a red rash (as have had with a minor splash in the past) but this time tea scalded my foot and caused a partial thickness burn- bandaged and very painful, needing changes at the GPs twice a week for the next week or two. Tricky to walk as so painful. Really horrible.

The nurse at the GP said the worst one she saw was a young woman who had full, got a Lemsip type drink and spilled it over herself, that required treatment at a burns unit, bad scarring. I was only protected by thick jeans and a top or it could have been much worse.

I don't think yabu really, sarky comments aside. Tea made with milk, is at a drinkable temperature. Even if you are sipping it, you're not scalding yourself (although you would if you drank it back in one I suppose). So it's easy to forget that it could still burn you.

NannyRed · 08/06/2019 21:12

Boiling water burns skin. If you were unaware of that where have you been living? 🤦‍♀️

PoorAnnie · 08/06/2019 21:57

I was scalded by steam from a coffee machine when I was 18. Spent months with my wrist in bandages having the wound dressed regularly and it was very painful. I couldn't believe that something that only happened in seconds could have such an impact. So I completely understand why you were shocked.

MorondelaFrontera · 08/06/2019 22:03

I never iron or allow anyone to iron when my young kids are around, it's all done after they are in bed at night. It's very unlikely anything would happen, but I couldn't risk it. Between the weight and the heat, I can't imagine - but it does happen.

Simonfromharlow · 08/06/2019 22:15

I hope you're not in too much pain!

When I was about 2 I pulled a cup of fresh coffee over myself. I still have a deep scar 32 years later!

I'm so paranoid about my kids and hot drinks! My mum has never forgiven herself for letting it happen!

winewolfhowls · 08/06/2019 22:15

No need for the sarky comments. Get well soon op.

dudsville · 08/06/2019 22:22

Re tea, it should be made at a fully boiled kettle 100c. Coffee is supposed to be made at 80c, so would cause less of a burn.

comedycentral · 08/06/2019 22:25

Do you all have to be such horrid bullies?

I hope you make a full recovery OP. Flowers

DrFoxtrot · 08/06/2019 23:14

I agree it's a useful reminder OP, particularly as what seems obvious to lots of people actually isn't that obvious to everyone. I would really hope that the vast majority of people would be aware of the dangers of hot drinks, but as that isn't the case, every reminder is worth it.

I hope your recovery is well underway Thanks.

TooStressyTooMessy · 08/06/2019 23:19

This place is horrible sometimes. It’s really important to remind people of this so thank you OP. However many horrible replies you get, this thread will have reminded others to be just that little bit more careful.

SmarmyMrMime · 08/06/2019 23:31

If you have a burn, prioritise cooling it in water for 20+ minutes before seeking help if there is no other immediate concern. Getting the heat out before making a journey to get it treated makes a significant difference to reducing the severity of it.

I like fruit teas, but tend to half fill with boiling water to let the tea bag diffuse, then layer with cold/ hot water so it can be drunk within the next 30 minutes. I can't cope with scalding hot drinks.

Poppins2016 · 08/06/2019 23:31

I was only protected by thick jeans and a top or it could have been much worse

It's possible your clothes actually made it worse... although the drink may have cooled slightly due to contact with your clothes, the fabric would have 'trapped' the liquid and kept it against your skin for much longer than if you had bare skin and it just ran off.

Belshels · 08/06/2019 23:35

My sister did this as a child, horrendous scalded foot, bandaged up at hospital and strong painkillers for 3 weeks. Awful! Hope it gets better soon.

FattopotamusAndChips · 08/06/2019 23:40

Today 18:11 Twisted Biscuit YANBU, a reminder never hurts

Bet the OP wishes her reminder never hurt!

IWantMyHatBack · 08/06/2019 23:48

Why are there always so many cunty responses on threads like these?

Grow the fuck up and have a word with yourselves FFS

user87382294757 · 09/06/2019 08:33

People can be cunts at times. I don't really care. Know not to blame myself for an accident- I have anxiety as well so may have played a part. If it means someone reads this and takes notice and doesn;t have to go through this pain, that is a result!

OP posts:
FoxFoxSierra · 09/06/2019 08:41

Yanbu. I read somewhere that it's worse if it has sugar in, not sure how true that is

MorondelaFrontera · 09/06/2019 08:43

to be fair, the wording of the OP is what brought the reactions.

I had no idea it could cause such a scald. is a bit of an odd statement.

I mean, we all know that even hot water from the tab, which usually doesn't reach boiling point, can cause horrendous injuries!

Firstworddinosaur · 09/06/2019 08:45

Thanks OP. I do get a bit complacent with tea as I make it all the time. A reminder to be careful is a good thing!

BlueSkiesLies · 09/06/2019 08:45

Just boiled water causes sever burning. Who would have thought that?!?!

FYI sugar in hot drinks is worse. In prisons they mix hot water with sugar to throw over people as a weapon.

Yes, I think sad people make others feel bad to make themselves feel better at times, like blaming people etc, maybe it is learnt from their parents or something, must be possible to be like that. But need to remember they might be in a bad place to be like that. Like bullies I guess. there we go. Maybe I am a bit naive about how bad these things can be- but then maybe others are too.

Graphista · 09/06/2019 10:15

I had a cousin who as a toddler tipped a large mug of black coffee over his chest and neck.

Note "had" he was rushed to hospital and treated but needed skin grafts and continuing treatment of this type over the years which took a toll and apparently the initial burn also affected his heart. He was prone to infections in the area despite being very careful and never really recovered. He died as an adult while undergoing more surgery for some scarring that had set in near his heart.

I hate seeing parents and other adults being so complacent around very young children with hot drinks.

Absolutely unnecessary, not only because hot drinks aren't the only option but because we now have lidded cups easily available that could be used to reduce risks.

Just commented on another thread about not understanding parents who let young kids run around in cafes and restaurants with no regard to their safety.

Op hope you feel better soon burns are bloody painful! And seem to take forever to heal too. Thanks

TwistedBiscuit · 09/06/2019 10:36

What a horribly sad story Graphista SadFlowers
