Pretty sure toddler is going to get this. And probably on holiday. Somewhere hot. Fabulous....

I need to know EVERYTHING!

I've looked online and know the tips but thought some mumsnet wisdom would give me some golden nuggets.

Help!

Camomile lotion in the bath is soothing

Usuallyinthemiddle · 08/06/2019 13:10

Virasoothe spray. Piriteze (the 2ce a day one) is better than Piriton (the every 4 hours one). Lots of Paracetamol but never Ibruprofen.

Cuddles, cool rooms, patience xx

Bringonspring · 08/06/2019 13:11

Too late to vaccinate?

imsorryiasked · 08/06/2019 13:12

Poxcilin - only thing that worked.

Houseworkavoider · 08/06/2019 13:14

Salt water baths really eased the itching for Dd.
I think it helped dry the spots out too.

funkythighcollector · 08/06/2019 13:14

Pay to get the vaccine

BertrandRussell · 08/06/2019 13:17

Herbal calendula cream. Not homeopathic- that’s just moisturiser-but herbal. Far better than camomile lotion. Cool oat baths. And calpol.

Hmmmbop · 08/06/2019 13:18

You say on holiday. Make sure you have good travel insurance. Keep him out of the sun and do not put suncream on.

Be aware that most airlines insist on waiting 7 days from the appearance of the last spot before they'll allow him to fly. We have just been delayed returning from holiday due to it.

Take everything you may need with you, lots of countries vaccinate against it and don't have virasoothe, poxclin, camomile available.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 08/06/2019 13:19

Is the toddler still in nappies?

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 08/06/2019 13:21

Oats in tights in the bath really helps.
Apparently head and shoulders original shampoo in the bath also helps.

Paint calamine lotion on with a brush rather than dabbing in. Dd wouldn’t tolerate the virasoothe stuff and just complained that it was sticky.

Babygrow/ romper on backwards to stop them from itching.

chickenfeathers · 08/06/2019 13:22

Another vote for Poxclin here. My son had chicken pox really bad - and it was the only thing that soothed the itching.

Hmmmbop · 08/06/2019 13:25

4 month old currently has it and a bath in head and shoulders really has helped dry them up.

Eggshellnutmeg · 08/06/2019 13:27

Anti histamine, calpol and the mousse that everyone recommended above.

If spots are starting don’t fly, you may get quarantined in hotel if it’s a family resort, as happened last week when a kid in kids club presented with chicken pox.

CJsGoldfish · 08/06/2019 14:05

My best tip is to use a gel rather than calamine. Not a single scar to be seen after using it and my little one had it all over his face. I would have used calamine, and there is nothing wrong with using it, but my doc suggests gel instead as it won't dry out the scabs which causes scarring like Calamine does.

LakeFlyPie · 08/06/2019 14:09

Poxclin worked really well for DS

Yorkshirepudding1987 · 08/06/2019 14:09

DS (2) has chicken pox at the moment.

We're using Poxclin, bicarb in the bath (I didnt have any oats) and piriton. Given calpol once as he was a bit warm. Luckily hes not been poorly with them.

If you're going to be abroad make sure you have travel insurance, it's unlikely you'd be able to fly home until the spots are dried/ scabbed.

Duxford1940 · 08/06/2019 15:36

Definitely pox clin, it's brilliant. And classic head and shoulders shampoo in the bath. Both DDs currently have chicken pox...

Noloudnoises · 08/06/2019 16:09

Ok thank you!

Hopefully they won't get it!

I've vaccinated mine

DorotheaHomeAlone · 08/06/2019 16:54

I've vaccinated mine Hmm Always one.

We found baking soda baths, piriton and calamine all helped. Good luck.

myself2020 · 08/06/2019 17:07

Get him/her vaccinated. Literally the only thing that makes sense

cccameron · 08/06/2019 17:09

This thread is odd. What makes you think that your child is going to get chickenpox on holiday?

cccameron · 08/06/2019 17:11

dorothea the child hasn't got chickenpox so yes vaccination makes sense. More so than taking a load of bloody baking soda on holiday just in case Hmm

MammaMia19 · 08/06/2019 17:14

Calpol, piriton (from over counter pharmacy) virasoothe. Virasoothe/piriton combo is amazing my dd didn’t scratch or scar, she was more bothered by the temp. A friend swears by oat baths too

Monestasi · 08/06/2019 17:17

Stupid post.

Vaccinate and avoid their suffering.
