Ds old school uniforms , school drama

calpolchaser · 08/06/2019 00:47

After so much stress and drama with ds old school, he transferred to a new school last year and is now thriving.
Today I was spring cleaning and came across a bag of his old uniforms that are in good condition. I had so much stress with the school/ head teacher last year that having them in the house is making life difficult and the associations are making me very angry. I was certain that chapter in life was over.i just want to bin the lot.
Dm says to donate them to the school and ordinarily I would do this but I am so AngryAngryAngry and do not want to help them or contribute to the school in anyway because of the trauma and stress inflicted on ds by being in that school ( issues regarding bullies and teachers not paying attention and forgetting onlyhis birthday which had him in tears etc)
First world problems and I am probably being dramatic but as most mums know , when it involves your dcs it becomes very personal.

I guess I'm just asking. Am i reasonable or not?

Clothing recycling, it's more environmentally friendly than the bin but doesn't compromise you. Other people be damned, sometimes it's ok to put yourself first.

SteelRiver · 08/06/2019 06:15

In my county council area, there is a school uniform bank. Maybe your area has something similar.

Glad to hear your son is doing do much better now.

youarenotkiddingme · 08/06/2019 06:29

Lots of areas now have independent support places that collect and sell or pass on old uniforms as well as furniture etc.

We have one near us and they advertise on FB and people from low income families can get whole uniform for a few quid.

Having had a child go through the same I'd say you'll feel better if you help someone else benefit. I have ds uniform to a local family who I know are low income.

Travelledtheworld · 08/06/2019 06:43

If you don't want to send it to a charity shop have it all recycled by donating to local fabric bank. Bin bag full and into the skip, bye bye.

Figure8 · 08/06/2019 06:55

Donate- help another family

Notabedofroses · 08/06/2019 07:14

Give it your mother to give to the school
Or recycle via charity shop.

The very sight of the uniform is the issue, get rid asap and move on to the next chapter is my best advice.

My church used to (re)distribute donated uniforms to families they knew who were struggling. Great scheme as it was often in excellent condition (I received uniform that way) and no-one knew other than the church that my parents hadn't paid full price. Might it be worth enquiring of a local church or two?

PantsyMcPantsface · 08/06/2019 07:26

I feel similarly about my eldest's original school - but I passed the old uniforms along via people I still knew with kids at the school, or the local neighbourhood FB groups (I just put a shout out that I had this stuff for the school in this size if anyone could collect it). Avoided it going to the school's coffers directly (or rather the fucking academy trust who were asset stripping the shit out of the school in favour of their flagship other one) but helped another parent out.

Moving them was literally the best parenting decision I've ever done - ended up, via a series of associated events, getting me back into work and then back to uni... I became a school governor which did my self-confidence no end, and my kids are absolutely bloody thriving socially and academically. Knowing that helps put the bitter feelings aside a hell of a lot. The appalling Head of the original school incidentally has also been ousted - so hopefully for the other kids around here the school is on the up.

WindsweptEgret · 08/06/2019 07:32

I'd donate it to the school, it's another family who will benefit. Giving it to a charity shop would make it more difficult for the person who needs it to find it, school uniform shop means it's all in one place. I wouldn't put it in clothing recycling if it would be fine for another child to wear.

BillywilliamV · 08/06/2019 07:36

Of course you should give it to another pupil at the school, get someone else to hand it in if it’s that bad.

Crankybitch · 08/06/2019 07:38

I get what people are saying re recycling but having had a child bullied I also understand the burn it camp.

If you do burn it (or part of it) it may help your son (and you) have some closure. My son hated doing some workbooks on a subject he didn’t like so when they were done he got to put them in the fire and light them as kindling - it made him much happier to do those books & to celebrate finishing them.

You could then donate the other parts and some of his old clothes to a charity shop

howwudufeel · 08/06/2019 07:40

Buy a box of matches and burn the lot.

rosedream · 08/06/2019 07:40

Don't go to the school if it effects you that much.

Give them to a charity shop.

If you can't get there then bin them. I know it's adding to landfill etc but it's not worth your state of mind to go to the school.

McFrostyNuts · 08/06/2019 07:50

why is this even an issue? why have you come onto mumsnet to ask? don't you have the capacity to decide for yourself?

Bin them
Burn them
Give to school
Give to charity

Problem sorted.

WatcherintheRye · 08/06/2019 07:54

Some teachers forgot your kids birthday?? I can't understand how that is an issue.
The op said hers was the only dc whose Birthday was not acknowledged at school. For most people that would be an issue. She doesn't say she kicked up a fuss, but at the very least you would feel sad for your child.

WatcherintheRye · 08/06/2019 08:03

*why is this even an issue? why have you come onto mumsnet to ask? don't you have the capacity to decide for yourself?

Don't most people who post questions on Mumsnet have the capacity to decide for themselves? Sometimes it's nice to get a different perspective on a problem. That's why Mumsnet and similar sites exist. Hth.

leiaskye · 08/06/2019 12:30

Same as a PP, our area has a uniform swap charity. The collection points are in the libraries & swimming pools.

Don’t bin it, please donate.

sheshootssheimplores · 08/06/2019 12:32

Just give them to a local charity shop and I’m sure they’ll be snapped up by a local mother who will be delighted. Then you’ve helped someone less fortunate and donated to a charity. That’s a lot of ‘feel good’ in one action! Flowers
