To think Follow Up emails for phone interviews look a bit desperate??

I've just been reading that they are The Norm and that a lot of hiring managers would rule out a candidate who didn't send one.

What do you all think? Just had a fairly short phone interview (he did tell me it would only be short as the face to face ones are far longer if you get to next stage) and sending a thank you seems weird but if it's the done thing I don't want to shoot myself in the foot!

I've never sent a thank you email. I've also been offered every job apart from one (due to working hours conflict).

I wouldn't ever follow up on a phone interview.
I might follow up and face to face if I thought the interview had gone really well and was really interested in the job, but generally I'd assume if they want to offer me the job, the employer would reach out rather than play silly games.

I would if particularly keen. It might be that there are two candidates they like but the other one seemed really keen and they thought you were a bit cooler, and so they pick the other one. Just a quick thank you is fine.

I wouldn’t bother. I’ve been the one doing recruiting and I’d regard receiving a follow up email as them trying waaaaaaay too hard.

Meh, I sent a thank you email the next day after a phone interview and I got a phone call shortly after offering me the job. It's work from home so there never was a face to face interview.

There are worse things than looking too try hard when job hunting, surely?

thanks folks you're confirming what I thought. I wonder if it's more of an American thing?

I doubt it would make any difference and I say this as someone who's been the recruiter.

They will offer to the person they want.

Makes no difference. In my organisation the only person who sees any candidate emails are the HR administrators. They don’t get passed on to the panel.
