Been watching 'It's a wonderful life' and have been inevitably wondering if the lives of my families and friends would be any different if I had never existed. It's really hard to imagine but it makes you think about the impact you've had in your life. If it's not too much naval gazing for a Thursday night - what impact - big or small - do you think or hope you have had on those around you?

Great kids

Liverbird77 · 06/06/2019 20:55

A lovely little boy and many years served as a teacher. I can look myself in the eye.

I discovered that penicillin looks like peniscillianmurphy.

I work as a child protection social worker and although i hope i have made a difference to the children and families that i come i to contact with. I know they won't always like me which is fine but i hope they feel respected and treated with empathy and compassion.

leghairdontcare · 06/06/2019 21:01

On a wonderful life level, loads (that's the point of the movie isn't it?)

But public stuff, I campaigned for better road safety near my son's school and got the speed limit changed. I negotiated payrises for people across Wales in a particular industry when I was a union rep. Same role, got zero hour contract staff onto secure contracts.

Taught hundreds of people to swim. A few people who've said it's changed their life - one notable adult who was so petrified, she wouldn't even go to a hotel with a pool on holiday, it took a fair while, and she dunked me and clutched my hand too tight a fair few times, but we got there in the end. Marvellous feeling. Another notable one - a child with autism whose mum said it was the only half hour of the week he was happy.

Whyhaveidonethis · 06/06/2019 21:07

To me it's not about making a difference to the world but making a difference to someone's world. I can't hope to change the whole world but I do know that I've helped single people significantly and that has in turn changed their world. I'm no great do gooder, but a kind word and a shoulder for a someone to cry on, helping someone down on their luck can totally change someone's life/world.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 06/06/2019 21:10

I make some kids happy and feel safe, listened to,like they matter. Sometimes I might even teach them something. Grin

I'm the reason Hello Fresh has to write 'this box contains food, don't leave it in a van' or words to that effect, on the side of the boxes.

notfromworcester · 06/06/2019 21:31

Got rid of a very senior workplace bully which improved a lot of people's working experience. Bit of a localised impact though Smile

Tigger001 · 06/06/2019 21:31

I have an amazing son who brings joy to our family.

I also help families who are struggling, just a little helping hand, not changing the world, but making their world that little bit better where I can.

ferretygubbins · 06/06/2019 21:32

I invented a new way of analysing tamoxifen and its metabolites which resulted in lower costs and increased safety in researching its prophylactic use in genetic linked breast cancers.

Laiste · 06/06/2019 21:35

I've been a pretty supportive TA for 8 years. One to one with AN.

But raising 4 DCs to be good people will affect many more lives for many more years positively. So that's what i'm most proud of :)

Faster · 06/06/2019 21:35

Patient stopped smoking because of my chat with her. Proper proud of that.

topcat2014 · 06/06/2019 21:41

Chair of school governors.
Charity trustee on two charities.
About to adopt for 1st time.

(on top of DC),

So, not curing diseases or anything - but better than just watching love island.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/06/2019 21:43

As a union rep, I have stood up for fair treatment and negotiated for better terms and conditions in reorganisations.

In my day job I have prosecuted teacher misconduct and been involved in stopping unsuitable teachers from working in schools, where there have been serious safeguarding concerns. I like to think that I have in my own way made pupils safer.

Bumper1969 · 06/06/2019 21:43

I split the atom.

And have I told you about my charity work?

Fancyaruck · 06/06/2019 21:49

As a teacher, I provide mumsnetters with someone to moan about Wink

glueandstick · 06/06/2019 21:51

I don’t think I’ve made any impact. Not positive anyhow. Perhaps I should find something to do.

elQuintoConyo · 06/06/2019 21:55

I helped an elderly lady tie her shoelaces outside the Waitrose in Hythe.

I helped a blind man negotiate buses across Barcelona because the red line metro was down.

I help lost tourists DAILY!

I've adopted a dog.

I'm pretty fab and can tell crap jokes until the cows come home Grin

Tigerlilly17 · 06/06/2019 21:55

I was a surrogate for another couple. After having my own two children it made me realise how hard it must be for those that struggle. I must have been mad though looking back as mine were just 2 and 7 months old when I had their embryos implanted in me lol. They had a healthy little boy and their own little family

AnneElliott · 06/06/2019 22:03

I gave a witness statement to police about an incident of GBH and the victim left her violent partner after reading it.

Swam out a fair distance in the sea to help two girls in a dinghy who couldn't swim - I was 9.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 06/06/2019 22:03

Former union rep also. Campaigned so hard for a (large) group of people to be classified as "employees" that we got a case to the high court - and won! Thus ensuring thousands more across the country were also classified as employees with all the benefits that go with that.

RangerLady · 06/06/2019 22:11

Given thousands of children fun and educational visits to the outdoors. Some had never been out of a town before. I hope at least a few have learned to love our planet and help protect it because of this.

LeavesAndGreenTrees · 06/06/2019 22:12

I’ve saved many many lives. Adults and children’s. And helped many more. I’ve also taught juniors and students who will go on to save lives themselves and help people too. And done a fair bit of research.

I have two wonderful kiddies too.
