St Ives

We're off to Cornwall in October, staying in St Ives though it's not booked yet. Looking for recommendations for things to do, things to see, places to eat. TIA

We’re going to Cornwall for the first time this summer, so thank you for the suggestions above. I really like the look of St Ives and am looking forward to spending a day there.

not sure about a day trip to St Ives. Hard to drive through, hard to find a parking spot, although park at the leisure centre car park and walk down. But then it's hard to walk back, because it's uphill. Beautiful place to stay, but a nightmare day trip. Whereabouts are you thinking of staying.

BlythesEyes · 10/06/2019 17:32

There's a bus that takes you up to the leisure centre car park for a quid. Or a steep 20 min walk. Go to Blas Burger for a meal ...its amazing and in the centre of St Ives. Take binoculars if you can and look out for dolphins and seals.
Marazion is a great day out too.

Same is true of Port Isaac. It’s gorgeous but incredibly hilly and impossible to park anywhere except what they call the main car park which is a long hike down to the village and uphill all the way back.

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 17:41

We’re staying in Coverack. We don’t mind an uphill walk, we do a fair bit of hiking in Cumbria.

alltoomuchrightnow · 10/06/2019 17:41

The St Ives poem is apparently about the other St Ives, as a resident angrily told me recently when I mixed it up with the cornish one.
Have just been to St Ives for a second time in March. Too crowded for me. I stay in Polperro off season.
re St Ives.. park at leisure centre, walk down, bus back up (v v steep!)
Kynance Cove is gorgeous

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 17:43

Marazion is where we go to St Michael’s Mount from isn’t it? Have wanted to visit Cornwall for years but it’s always seemed like such a long drive.

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 17:45

I want to visit the Hepworth and the Tate so St Ives is a must see for me. We’ll deal with the crowds and walk some of the Cornwall way the next day to recover!

alltoomuchrightnow · 10/06/2019 17:45

For me it's definitely Port Isaac/ Polperro/ Bodmin/Boscastle/
Lost Gardens of Heligan are worth a look
Wasn't keen on Penzance
We got OS maps and went off seeking different stone circles and quoits

BumandChips · 10/06/2019 17:48

We stayed at the most beautiful b&b in Carbis bay right near the train in to St Ives.

The parking in St Ives itself is crazy and the big car park is at the top of the hill by the leisure centre. It’s a bit of a trek back! Driving round the actual town is a nightmare, all twisty and single roads.

The lost gardens of Heligan are amazing. The Eden project is good and you can get an annual pass.

sleepwhenidie · 10/06/2019 18:01

If you aren’t staying in St Ives it’s easier to get the train in the branch line runs between Penzance via Carbis Bay and St Erth.

You can get amazing food there. There’s one family that own most of the great restaurants and they are all fabulous. My order of preference:
Porthminster Beach Cafe
Porthminster Kitchen
Porthmeor Beach Cafe (especially breakfast, get there early to get a pod outside and book early to have dinner in a pod)!
The Loft is good.
Thai Tapas apparently great.
Kids love the Rum & Crab shack.

Best fish and chips anywhere (not just St Ives)- Balancing Eel just behind the Sloop In on the harbour.

It’s nice to walk from St Ives to Carbis Bay around the headland, easy 30 min stroll and the hotel is gorgeous, but I’d just go for coffee as it’s hideously expensive (£19 for spaghetti bolognese iirc Shock).

A gorgeous walk, about 2,5hrs, across the fields and tracking the coastline, takes you to Zennor where there’s a v old pub called the Tinners, they do a great Sunday lunch or food generally, with a big beer garden. If you don’t want to walk back get a cab or check bus times, bus stop 2 mins away. If you want a more serious hike (4+ hrs) you can take the coastline route. Google St Ives to Zennor walks for guidance.

The Gurnards Head pub is renowned for its food if you fancy a change of scene.

sleepwhenidie · 10/06/2019 18:06

Oh and the surf school at Porthmeor is great if you want to learn to surf, kayak or SUP boarding.

We spend a lot of time in St Ives and May or October are my favourite times to go 😍

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 18:13

@sleepwhenidie
Thanks so much!

SunsetBunny · 10/06/2019 18:31

Just love St Ives. We go back every year. Once you’ve been it sucks you in and you can’t keep away! We’re actually going twice this year - nice to see it at a different time of year for a change.

Was also going to suggest the train for day trips. One of the most beautiful branch line journeys in the country. There is some parking at St Erth but it’s easier to park at Lelant Saltings.
I wouldn’t bother with Lands End - Cape Cornwall is better. Get a pasty in St Just on the way.
Watch the sunset on Porthmeor Beach!

SunsetBunny · 10/06/2019 18:37

For me Heligan would be an on the way back or on the way there visit.
There are loads of gardens to see in that part of Cornwall. Last year we went to Trebah but I think the NT Glendurgan is nearby & there’s another NT one near Penzance that looks worth a visit (in addition to the mount, which is also NT of course!)

LakieLady · 10/06/2019 18:54

Get a pasty in St Just on the way.

The pasties from the butcher in St Just are currently top of the Lakie pasty poll. Bloody fantastic! (Second best are the ones from the village shop in Portscatho, on Roseland). Warrens, a chain bakery with branches all over Cornwall, also do a very fine pasty.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the maritime museum in Falmouth, which is bloody interesting. We've also been to some very good exhibitions at the gallery in Falmouth.

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 20:51

Thanks again! Looking forward to this holiday even more now.

lyralalala · 10/06/2019 21:22

That’s what we always do when we go in for the day.

The Seafood Cafe has been brilliant every year when we went. You have to book early for the evening if you want a guaranteed table or else you have to queue up and take your chances.

They don’t have a set menu as what you can have fish/meat wise depends on what they get fresh that day.

sleepwhenidie · 10/06/2019 22:14

They are actually making the car park at St Erth huge, (it’s the place you change train for St Ives coming from London) not sure when it’s due to be finished...

Gth1234 · 10/06/2019 23:25

From Coverack, you'll love Kynance Cove. Go on a sunny day. Long walk down, though.

I really like Porthleven, although I think Mr Stein is expanding his empire there.

Persea · 10/06/2019 23:34

Really liked this place

transformandriseup · 11/06/2019 05:45

I must warn you parking at St Ives can be impossible, even in October. I can confirm the new car park at St Erth is now open and it is huge with disabled access and traffic lights from the A30. There is a park and ride bus for Hayle as parking can be bad there too.

transformandriseup · 11/06/2019 05:47

Geevor Tin Mine is a great place to visit and the drive from St Ives is even better Smile

TheTeaFairy · 11/06/2019 06:22

Mousehole is beautiful for a mooch around. There's a great tidal rock swimming pool which is fantastic for children and adults to play in. If you visit Mousehole, The Old Coastguard restaurant (also a hotel) serves delicious food and has squashy sofas you can lounge on while reading the papers. Incredible sea views too Smile

Binkybix · 11/06/2019 06:35

If you have small children I would think carefully about the coastal St Ives to zennor walk. It’s hard work!

Daphnesmate · 11/06/2019 09:34

Watching with interest - we are heading in this direction, this year too.
