I want to blog - am I being silly?

Am I being ridiculous thinking I could do this? I've never done anything like it and have no idea how to start.
I once wrote an article for a site and it got rejected (I was so disheartened).
I want to do it particularly about motherhood (and being a young parent).
Where the hell do I start and am I being stupid thinking I can even do this???

Motherhood blogs have been absolutely done to death, dug up and done again and again.

Can you think of something else to blog about?

I'm pretty sure there's a bloggers topic on MN. They might be able to help with some suggestions.

Bloggers topic

Hello OP,
I have been blogging for seven months now.

Blogging itself is pretty easy. You can either go via WordPress, blogger or any of the other sites or you can self-host using a domain name and hosting. I was originally with WordPress but then moved over to self-hosting.

I also join a couple of facebook groups about blogging and got learn about things I never realised.

Things to also to think about is: What is the name of your blog and how often can you commit to keeping it up to date. I write about mental health and have found that 2 times a week is just about right.

Its never silly and if I had given up after a single rejection I wouldnt be doing anything.

The other issue is that there are many bloggers out there so finding a niche may be difficult.

There is also a section on Mumsnet for bloggers and might be worth check it out.

good luck.

I blog for part of my job.

It depends what you're aiming for.

If you want to simply write about your experiences for you, then of course you should do it.

If you want to aim for it to be widely read or even monetise your blogging, you need to find a topic that hasn't been exhausted and I'm afraid motherhood has!

Buy a cheap domain name from a hosting company like GoDaddy (others are available!) and host your blog on a free platform like Wordpress.

I don't think the world needs any more bloggers, to be honest.

To what end?

Think about why you want to do it. If your motivation is easy money, find something else to do. If you have a compulsion to write about the subject and you have a way with words and pictures, go for it. But as others have said, the parenting blog market is pretty saturated. Also, there are huge ethical issues around putting your children's lives online.

Oh, and be aware that it's a MASSIVE time-suck. I put many hours of work into every single post.

But if you're OK with all that, go ahead. My blog has changed my life, and has led to lots of paid writing work including a book deal, plus video and TV work. It's taken a LOT of effort over a good few years to get to where I am now, so don't expect massive success overnight.

Good luck!
