I can't believe anyone watches these two clowns.

Matleavemadam · 06/06/2019 10:20

I find it annoying that she can't sit up straight in her chair for more than 10 seconds before leaning on the desk

£1.2million Income Tax bill Lorraine dodged paying

For clarity, this relates to a long running battle between HMRC and all types of freelance worker over IR35, most of the freelancers involved earning substantially less than Lorraine Kelly.

The purpose of IR35 is to prevent employees working as freelancers in order to reduce their tax bill. If IR35 is successfully invoked, the effect is that fees paid to the service company that employs the freelancer are treated as if they were paid direct to the freelancer as salary. Whilst this case was high profile, it is by no means the only case HMRC has lost. They have only won one IR35 case in the last decade (Christa Ackroyd) and that one is being appealed, with most lawyers thinking HMRC will lose.

So no, Lorraine Kelly has not "dodged tax". She has paid the correct amount of tax. She has successfully resisted HMRC attempting, yet again, to misuse tax law to charge freelancers more tax than is actually due.

AlaskanOilBaron · 06/06/2019 10:28

The tax thing is interesting, thanks bridge.

I always enjoy watching our various national treasures (some lesser than others) employing accountants to reduce their tax bill while admonishing us civilians to pay more.

LittlePaintBox · 06/06/2019 10:29

I like her better on GMTV with Piers than I did before. She comes across as sparky and intelligent to me.

IncredIblySaDToo · 06/06/2019 10:33

Susannah asks intelligent and pointed questions. She's a good journalist

😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

TheAngryLlama · 06/06/2019 10:37

I am not sure I have ever heard Lorraine kelly lecture anyone about tax, or indeed express a political opinion of any kind. But I admit I’ve not been watching her that closely.

TatianaLarina · 06/06/2019 10:37

Susannah’s very bright - she should doing the news or Newsnight. Rather than humouring toerags like Morgan. But it may be more lucrative.

AlaskanOilBaron · 06/06/2019 10:43

I'll admit I've never really heard to speak at all. I was just taking a wild guess, but also referring to British celebrities in general.

DesperadoDan · 06/06/2019 11:37

I like Susannah Reid. Not so keen on Piers. GMTV is not Newsnight, it’s semi fluffy breakfast telly which is easy to watch.
Susannah comes across as an intelligent, confident and beautiful woman who has worked hard to get where she is, unfortunately some women don’t like that. Shame.

CassianAndor · 06/06/2019 11:40

why watch crap like this, though??

DGRossetti · 06/06/2019 11:48

Is she the person gawping over a Texan inmates execution. In the sensitively and not-at-all-sensationalist Death Row: Countdown to Execution

www.itv.com/presscentre/ep1week24/death-row-countdown-execution

Seems she is.

thenightsky · 06/06/2019 11:53

I do that because I've got bursitis in one arse cheek. SR needs to get herself a memory foam ring to sit on Grin

KinkyHair · 06/06/2019 12:04

I hate the way she keeps putting a finger nail between her teeth. Either that or she has a pen in her mouth.

ForalltheSaints · 06/06/2019 12:56

Susanna Reid is on ITV as the BBC relocated to Salford Quays and quite understandably wanted to remain in the part of London she loves.

Personally watch the BBC at that time of the morning, and find Naga Munchetty and Louise Minchin presenters much more appropriate for a breakfast news show.

As for Piers Morgan, I remember his time as a newspaper editor.

Gilead · 06/06/2019 12:57

I find it annoying when women can't seem to support one another, particularly when it's having a pop at high profile women. Really helpful...

keepingbees · 06/06/2019 13:03

I'm not keen on Piers but I think him and Susanna bounce off each other well and I enjoy their interviews. She's attractive and you can see she knows it, but I don't dislike her.

I literally couldn't give a shit about all the quoted arse bollocks numbers and HMRC shite.
I merely pointed out the judge decided Lorraine was playing the "Chatty persona" Lorraine and not being herself which meant she didn't have to pay £1.2million.
Now you can defend freelancers rights to not pay tax, you can moan about HMRC trying to get tax they feel they're owed, that's up to you.
Personally.. I'd rather wealthy people didn't employ shysters that know the loop holes that means they avoid paying millions tax.

Let's not forget, Amazon and google.. everytime someone mentions them, I hope you Bob on and let everyone know that actually Amazon and Google have paid all the tax they legally owe.
Legally... Morally... There's a difference.

prh47bridge · 06/06/2019 17:09

Freelancers do not have a right to not pay tax. They have the same right as anyone else to pay only the tax that is due. HMRC have been told over and over again by the courts that their interpretation of IR35 is wrong but they keep trying it on.

I'd rather wealthy people didn't employ shysters that know the loop holes that means they avoid paying millions tax

The tax arrangements around freelancers are not loopholes. The tax system was designed like that. Any competent accountant will recommend an approach similar to that used by Lorraine Kelly for any freelancer - IT staff, accountants, whatever. This is not something that only the rich do. And paying only the tax that is actually due is NOT "avoiding paying". Or perhaps you would be happy if HMRC turned up and demanded several thousand pounds from you that you didn't actually owe and would regard it as "avoiding paying" if you refused to pay.

Sarcelle · 06/06/2019 17:35

She is smug. This show was close to coming off air because it was failing before Piers was drafted in. She is riding on his coat tails, she was lucky he came along, she would be out of a prime tv job otherwise. She pretends to be be this independent woman but she comes across as Piers' surrendered tv wife.

Inkanta · 06/06/2019 17:35

Yes I like Piers and Susanna - but not keen on Lorraine.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 06/06/2019 18:22

I did type a reply about wealthy people affording accountants and lawyers, but I can't be arsed.

The wealthy should pay their tax bill, not do their utmost to avoid it, wether it's loopholes, expensive crafty accountants knowing how to not pay tax, fancy lawyers having people reclassified or business men paying themselves in loans to avoid income tax.. makes no odds.. it's just the wealthy getting wealthy and the country burning whilst they do it.
But hey, it's legal.

Go well tax Dodgers and crafty loopholers..

TheAngryLlama · 06/06/2019 18:38

So should people pay more tax than the law requires?
I have an ISA and I pay into a pension with associated tax relief. Am I bad?
Just trying to understand the logic being applied here.

NameChangeNugget · 06/06/2019 19:53

I’m trying to understand the logic too @TheAngryLlama

I’m not seeing it??
