Newborn and 22m old.. Double pram or buggy board.

I have a perfectly good single pram that I want to use again. But dd will only be 22m old and most of the time I'd be on my. Own with them out and about. Although I do drive.
Speaking to my. Mum she said it would be sad to make dd grow up too quick and walk everywhere. She's 15m now and is a good walker but that's with me having both hands free and going places with no matter of urgency I. E the park, local. Shop. Not the city centre.

A friend said about the bugaboo donkey as can convert to a single when dd is with childminder or GP as they often take her out. Alternatively I still have my other pram.
. I certainly won't pay 1500 for a BN bugaboo but would get 2nd had around 450 if needed but didn't want it to be a wasted expense?
My other thinking is it will be winter?

I bought a buggy board, there is 2 years between my dc. My 1st never really went in the pram just before my 2nd arrived so didn't see the point in getting a double buggy. It can be hard work at times, when she's tired and wants carried rather than jump on the board.

Think she prefers it now as she gets to watch her sister in her pram.

However the other thing to think about is if they need a nap when you are out, my dd doesn't nap in the pram anymore so made sense not to pay hundreds.

Rach182 · 05/06/2019 17:42

I have a 2.5yr old and 3 month old. I thought I could handle just a buggy board and sling for the little one. But after my helplessness and mortification during two tantrums in public where toddler was on the floor and baby was also screaming, I have just got us a double pram.

Sometimes it's worth being able to strap the toddler in. Also the time I do things is no longer dictated by the pram I have - the past couple of months I hadn't gone out anywhere that could coincide with toddler's nap time as I had no pram for him to doze in.

Also my toddler got pram envy and was jealous of his younger sibling being in a pram when that was previously his space.

So I've done it for my own sanity. But some of my mum friends with 2 children managed fine without a double buggy at all.

I’d highly recommend the double out n about. I got a second hand one for £150 and you can get a carrycot and adaptors for the new baby.
Then just keep your single for when you only have the baby with you.

Rach182 · 05/06/2019 17:50

Oh and I got the bugaboo donkey so I could make it into a large single for days I have just the baby.

ToftheB · 05/06/2019 17:52

Watching with interest. I’m going to have the same age gap and I was hoping to avoid buying another pram and just use a sling for the little one for the first 6 months.... you’re all making me think I might regret this though!

Settlersofcatan · 05/06/2019 17:57

I think it depends how often you walk places and need to get there on a schedule. We do a lot of that and our 2.5 year old just doesn't always cooperate so even though he is capable of using a buggy board, it's often helpful to be able to strap him in.

He'll be more like 30 months when the baby is born so we are hoping to get away with a sling plus pushchair but I'd definitely have wanted a double with a 23 month gap

roses2 · 05/06/2019 17:57

I’ve got a 3 year old and a 6 year old and still use a double buggy which I got for £50 on eBay. My 6 year old is very lazy Blush

soontobefour4 · 05/06/2019 17:57

I've got 20 months between mine and they are now 2 months and 22 months. I've struggled on with combinations of sling, single buggy and buggy board and am now buying a double buggy.

I hadn't thought about the times I wanted to be able to keep the toddler contained, like today when he was quite happy to walk with us to the doctors but didn't want to wait in line to collect our prescription.

Also, it's hard to hold a toddlers hand and steer a buggy, so unless you're only going to parks etc and don't need to worry about pavements, roads, cars, car parks, other people etc I think you'll need one.

Amanduh · 05/06/2019 17:58

Also think at that age you’ll regret no double buggy. 2 year olds still often need it. You’ll want it in shops etc and on holidays/trips.. I wouldn’t rely on a buggy board

Minai · 05/06/2019 18:07

It really depends on the child and how much walking you do. I have an 18mth gap and there is no way I could have had ds1 walking. He runs off, doesn’t walk where I want him to, won’t walk on reins, it’s a nightmare going anywhere with him on foot. Also I don’t drive so walk everywhere, often walk 1hr to a baby group and I wouldn’t expect him to be able to do that but if you drive and only walk short distances then you might be ok.

SmarmyMrMime · 05/06/2019 18:08

I had a 2y 3m gap. I managed with a single pram and a few slings/ carriers and put who needed it most in the pram and the other in the carrier. DS1 still took naps regularly until he was 3+ and I was able to carry them until they were about 4.

DS1 definitely wasn't able to walk reliably everywhere at a functional speed until he was 4. I do walk a lot locally. People who drive everywhere door to door would find they manage sooner than those who don't.

BigRedLondonBus · 05/06/2019 18:11

Definitely get a double. Doesn’t your little one still nap? I know mine does (just turned 2) so a buggy board would be useless.

Fireinthegrate · 05/06/2019 18:14

My daughter was 29mths when my next baby was born and I didn’t get a double pram which looking back I regret now. She was a really good walker but when tired ended up standing on the front of the baby’s pushchair.
I think at 22mths, however good a walker she is, you will need a double.

Eliza9919 · 05/06/2019 18:19

What's your aibu?

Thebig3 · 05/06/2019 18:22

I had 24mths between my eldest 2 and I thought I wouldn't need a double pram. 6 weeks after my son was born I bought a double one. It was a tandem one so could be a single if needed. It was the best thing I bought!! I used it so much.

Definitely worth it at that age.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 05/06/2019 18:23

My two are 20m apart and we used the sling/buggy/buggy board combo. I hated the second hand double we got given and got rid of it straight away. With a sling and a buggy board you’ve got the best of both worlds as toddler can go in pushchair if really necessary.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 05/06/2019 18:29

could you get a buggy like this OP? (the seat can be lifted out and a rear facing seat attached for baby)

firstimemamma · 05/06/2019 18:30

My niece started walking everywhere as soon as she turned 2 but I appreciate that's not possible for every child! Do what works best for you op Smile

karayza · 05/06/2019 18:57

I can't recommend the buggy board with seat enough! The iSafe one is only £55 and easily clips on and off plus can take the seat off when she's older!
I have now 5 month old and 2 and half year old - she loves sitting on the saddle behind the or and waves like the queen as we walk down the street! It also tucks in under the handle so isn't over-long like a tandem pram and you can still get in shops whereas double buggy is a struggle. I did panic buy a double buggy off Schpock for £50 but haven't used it at all and have actually sold it on this week!

AuntGertrude · 05/06/2019 19:08

We had this gap and it was definitely worth getting a double, second-hand, just for a year. What if the older one is tired and wants to snooze rather than having to hang onto a buggy board?

InDubiousBattle · 05/06/2019 19:20

We have a 19 month gap and I loved our Phil & Teds. We paid £80 for it second hand and it was absolutely fantastic. Unless you hardly walk anywhere a 2 year old will get tired and I personally found pushing a buggy with a buggy board and my tall ds really uncomfortable when I tried some out. They sometimes fall asleep at the same time and you can park them up asleep nd get a coffee.

Aftereights91 · 05/06/2019 19:21

Honestly depends on the child. I have a just turned three and just turned one year old. I had all intentions of using a single with a buggy board or ds walking. Yeh that didn't happen 😂 he'd try and bolt, flat out on the floor etc he was a total nightmare. He's only just started walking decently enough that I can take him out on my own walking with the single. If we're going anywhere urgent he still goes in the double because he's so slow, ie rushing to the doctor's etc

HereForAdvice2019 · 05/06/2019 19:24

Thank you for suggestions will show them to dp.
I do walk a fair bit. Our nearest supermarket is on a high St and is only 1. 3 miles away. But down one big hill and up another. Along a busy A road.. But due to parking in that High Street it's easier to walk.. But with a pram.

I should of said a sling won't be suitable as I have a huge anxiety of things being tight around my neck and upper body. I tried one with dd and panicked.. In fact I tried a few..

Dp wanted a double to make it easier for me. So will look at the suggested ones. I have a 7 seater but 2 folded down so plenty of boot space. ( currently havec my pioneer, plus the carrycot ready to be stored and an umbrella fold in the boot and a spare car seat so space wise I'm not too worried.)

I like the idea of being able to convert to a single for when one or the other isn't with me.

Double. Particularly as it will be winter. My DS1 walked at 14 months but we still used the pushchair a lot until he was about 2.5 then we started to wean him off it as I had DS2 shortly after he turned 3. If we’d had an age gap any smaller we would have bought a double.

I generally think that this decision depends on age gaps like this...
Under 2 years: double
2-3 years: child and season dependent
3 years and over: buggy board

nauseous5000 · 05/06/2019 19:32

Never (sadly) had two, but given your attachment to your current buggy I'd get a great sling and delay DDs transition to buggy board, but when my DD was buggy age I couldn't drive so would walk 5 miles a day to nursery and back. Couldn't have tolerated that with a 2.5 yo walking pace! Good news is by time she was 3 she was a great (albeit slow) walker. All depends on circumstance and whether her naturally slow walking could make you late for work I guess?
