To think the Mirena IUD aid an amazing invention

Got my 3rd Mirena fitted today.

First one was so I did not have to set my alarm in the night to change my sanitary protection. I was bleeding for 7 days every 14 days. I went from that to no periods at all.

DM has the same problem in the 1980s and has to have a hysterectomy. I'm so happy to have avoided major surgery.

Now the Mirena is part of my HRT and it is the safest way to deliver the progesterone element.

Posting because I have seen a lot of posts from people who have not got on with it and I guess you are more likely to post if you are dissatisfied. The doctor I saw today inserts 400 a week!

I bloody love mine. Had it almost a year and have gone from horrendously heavy periods to none at all

flep · 05/06/2019 15:13

The doctor I saw today inserts 400 a week!

That's more than 57 every single day.

Hmm
SingingGoldfinch · 05/06/2019 15:16

I had one or shortly after having dcs and it sent me a bit loopy and then I got an ovarian cyst so was advised to have it removed. Now 10 years later I'm considering having one again but worried about possibility of more cysts. I'm on cerrazette at the mo which is ok but I like the idea of not having to take pill and also lower levels of progesterone.

MrsKoala · 05/06/2019 15:21

This is quite timely. I have always had heavy periods and in the last 6 months they have gone crazy. Day 3 and 4 I can't leave the house for longer than the school run as I flood a tampon and night pad every hour. I'm now anaemic. The dr has suggested a progesterone coil (which I think is the same as the marina one) and i'm not sure. I have a normal 'copper' coil at the moment and have had them since I was 16 as I never liked the idea of chemicals in me.

Coldilox · 05/06/2019 15:25

Adore mine, went from horrendous periods to none.

NaToth · 05/06/2019 15:26

Interesting that a Mirena can deliver the progesterone element of HRT. When they were trying to get me to have one, prior to menopause, they assured me that the hormones in the Mirena stay within the uterus.

Which one is it?

avocadochocolate · 05/06/2019 15:28

Yes @NaToth. I think that is correct.

I have been considering this for after we've done having DC but then the thought makes me cringe.

It's one of the few methods of contraception I can use but still .

FrenchBoule · 05/06/2019 15:30

Fantastic until it fails 😂 2 mirena failures here, 2 MAP, on the pill since. Whatever works for you, my womb clearly didn’t like it!

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 05/06/2019 15:31

I’ve had one for a year, I’ve previously only ever had copper. I was thinking on Tuesday ‘I haven’t had a period for 3 months’, went to the loo and my period had started!😂

PookieDo · 05/06/2019 15:31

I’ve had 2 fails too
Epic ones!

AbsentmindedWoman · 05/06/2019 15:32

57 a day! What! How long does it take to insert?! How many fittings per hour?

PookieDo · 05/06/2019 15:33

Usually when I run an IUD clinic it is 15-30 mins per patient so this doctor must really be shoving them in at an alarming rate

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 05/06/2019 15:35

@MrsKoala I know so many people who have terrible periods on the copper coil. I think heavy bleeding is one of its side effects

over50andfab · 05/06/2019 15:36

I had the Mirena put in a couple of years back to deal with awful bleeding, despite being over menopausal age. No periods since...bliss! I’ve since added in the oestrogen patch and I agree - the safest combo in delivering HRT to the system.

However over the past few months I seem to be getting a dark, slightly thready discharge possibly on a monthly basis.which seems to be getting worse. Just enough to need a daily pad. Can only think it’s my fanjo having a bit of a clean out but annoying! Anyone else get that?

KTD27 · 05/06/2019 15:36

I’m on month three of having my first one fitted at the ripe old age of 39.
My doc warned me about spotting, bleeding weirdly for the first few months and in fact warned I may want it out but to give it at least 4 months.
I’ve had precisely one day of spotting and that was after having it inserted. Periods have come on time so far but with absolutely zero pain (a darn sight different from my crippling period pains pre coil and kids) they are no where near as heavy and I think it’s bloody marvellous so far!

PookieDo · 05/06/2019 15:39

So if he does a clinic from 8am to 8pm, 10 min slots he could see 6 patients an hour - include a lunch break he could be doing 57 patients per day

Possibly

BettyPitts · 05/06/2019 15:42

57 a day? Yeah ok.

I don't know why these doctors are so keen to talk nonsense about these things.

I hated mine and so did a surprisingly large amount of my friends. One had it fall out in the shower Shock

CusheyButterfield · 05/06/2019 15:42

I've had mine since January and I love it too! I had put up with horrendous periods for years, mainly as all the posts I saw online were negative.

Now I only wish I had done it sooner.

avocadochocolate · 05/06/2019 15:43

Think doctor must have meant 'her and her team' re the 400 Mirena's a week. She was the head of the entire team.

OP posts:
BalthazarImpresario · 05/06/2019 15:44

I'm on my 3rd I think, first one failed and came out still in the T position (it was not a pleasant experience) but I love them.
Currently having my first proper period in ages but its still so much lighter then before (and I never suffered with very heavy periods)

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 05/06/2019 15:45

Love mine too. Had some cramping when it was first put in, light periods for the first few months and then none since!

For some minor discomfort every 5 years I feel it's well worth it. I recommend them to everyone.

Julietee · 05/06/2019 15:47

I just had mine out Monday. I was sick of constantly spotting and longer periods.
Now I've gone into a tremendously heavy period days after tailing off a two week one, so not thrilled.

SinkGirl · 05/06/2019 15:48

One of the worst medical experiences of my life. Wouldn’t have another if you paid me. I’m glad it works for some though!

Dickybow321 · 05/06/2019 15:49

I had constant bleeding and 2 stone weight gain within a few months. So jealous of those who think it's marvellous.
