More than that is groggifying surely?

Hmmmmm.

My nap hierarchy goes:
Nanna Nap, toes-up, snooze. Two hours max. Any more, yup - groggyfied.

meow1989 · 04/06/2019 14:12

My naps can last 2-4 hours (or could before ds!)

namechange6678 · 04/06/2019 14:13

I usually set an alarm for every 15 mins if I'm napping and snooze it. Then, even if I nap for hours, I haven't gone into a deep enough sleep to wake up feeling gross!

ClareDanesDress · 04/06/2019 14:15

Loving nap hierarchy!

I think it’s quality not quantity. I have to have warm feet and a supported neck. And ideally a weighted blanket or my Big Coat over me.

To me a nap is under an hour.
(Apparently lionesses get 15-18 hours of kip a day, sounds just about right).

ClareDanesDress · 04/06/2019 14:16

Yes I’d agree with that.

Less than 20 minutes and I don’t feel refreshed, just unsatisfied.

I heard a think in the radio that said the optimum time for a nap is either 8 or 12 minutes 😂. Im sure that's what it said anyway because I remember thinking how ridiculous.

Drogosnextwife · 04/06/2019 14:17

Thing on, not think in

Sparklybanana · 04/06/2019 14:17

Hell no. My two both regularly slept for 2 hours plus. I very rarely woke them up early from a nap and both were able to sleep through the night no issues. Also, past 4 months, they're in adult sleeping mode so 40 minutes is a sleep cycle. I'd be raging if someone kept waking me up midway through sleep!
I like the rule - if they fall asleep in the car outside of nap time then they're not getting enough sleep. If they stay awake then they are.
15 mins? Shock

ClareDanesDress · 04/06/2019 14:17

That’s not a nap is it? That’s a sort of ‘deep thought’

Sparklybanana · 04/06/2019 14:19

Wait are you talking big people?

Naps make me feel worse... I do envy people who can though.

ClareDanesDress · 04/06/2019 14:19

Some of my best naps have been in the back seat of the car before pickup. No one ever really looks in the back. I have a little nap kit of a cushion and throw. It is my secret pleasure. Earplugs and eye mask if I’m feeling particularly decadent

ClareDanesDress · 04/06/2019 14:20

Big people yes.

My naps might be an hour, 4hrs or a day Blush
I sleep like the dead. It's been known for me to "go for a nap" at 4pm and not wake up until 6am with the cat happily snoring on me

KittenMittens1 · 04/06/2019 14:46

A full cycle nap is roughly about 90 minutes. So if you have time, taking a 90-minute nap is helpful in beating fatigue. An average sleep cycle is of 90 minutes, so if you nap for that long, you will enter REM sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed.

^ from a science mag,

tbh if i fall asleep or have a nap i dont choose when i wake back up again haha once im out i could be out for hours haha

NoSauce · 04/06/2019 14:47

I feel better after a 45/50 minute nap. 20 mins and I’d still feel tired.

Gamorasgran · 04/06/2019 14:50

I rarely nap but when I do it's usually about 45 minutes and I wake up naturally (without alarm or annoying child)

TheBrockmans · 04/06/2019 14:51

20 mins is good. 40 mins better. Too long and the work piles up. I love working at home and managing my own timetable!

HomeMadeMadness · 04/06/2019 15:17

20 minutes would just leave me more groggy than having no nap. I need around an hour or it's not worth it.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 04/06/2019 15:25

I sometimes get this huge urges to sleep that I cannot fight and I just need to sleep right now. If at home I lie on the floor and sleep for ten mins. When I wake up I feel fine again!

Sparklingfairylights · 04/06/2019 15:35

Man I love a nap. 30-40 mins is so nice, more than an hour in the afternoon and I would have trouble sleeping that night. Could really do with one right now but not got enough time...

Funkyslippers · 04/06/2019 15:39

I wish I could sleep during the day but I just can't. Can't remember the last time I did. Silly question: is it essential to sleep during a nap or can you just close your eyes and relax?

wink1970 · 04/06/2019 16:06

regular napper here, usually 40 minutes. I lay on top of the duvet but feet under the throw, shut the curtains and doors and seethe if DH comes looking for me and wakes me up

tardyheart · 04/06/2019 16:11

Just on the Radio, Dr Hilary Jones said for the optimum nap you should:-

Have a cup of coffee for the caffeine
Set your alarm for 19 mins
Have your nap, alarm goes off and you should be refreshed and the caffeine will have kicked in.

I may try it at the weekend, love a Sunday afternoon nap.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/06/2019 16:11

15-20 mins postparandial 'power nap' is supposed to be beneficial. I've never got the knack (only daytime napping is if I'm a passenger in the car returning from somewhere).

My dad used to come home for lunch, back then The Archers was on earlier at just the right time so he could eat while listening to the news, and nap during the Archers with Dum-de-dum serving as his alarm clock.Grin
