I’m meant to start at 9am I’ve been on a bus for a fucking hour and I’m still 30 minutes away the traffic in Birmingham is horrific this morning.

I think I’m going to call my new boss and explain/beg forgiveness.

Please help me know what to say!

I made it into work on my first day but was sick the second and had to take the 3rd day off. I was mortified, but life happens.

My son (then 6), after watching Home Alone the previous weekend, went missing on my first day of a new job. He had gotten up before me, dressed himself, helped himself to £20 from my purse and took himself off to the corner shop to buy a tin of quality streets. Told the cashier I was waiting outside in the car. A lady found him hiking to softplay. She recognised him as a friend of her grand daughters and asked him where he was going at 8oclock in the morning on his own. “Oh I’m just meeting my mum at [softplay name]”. She said “I don’t think you are”, he said “I am” and then ran from her. She followed him and convinced him to come into McDonalds for a bacon bap thing while the police came. I had staff from the school, neighbours and staff from the corner shop out looking for him. Thankfully I didn’t start work until 10 that morning but I can tell you not a single piece of information from my induction was retained that day Grin

My first day at my first ever proper job ever was a disaster.

My accommodation fell through a couple of days before I started and I couldn't find anywhere else in time so I had to get there from my parents' house by tube/ train. It was a two hour jouney. I got to the mainline and found all the trains were cancelled This was before mobile phones. I found a payphone and left a message with reception (the boss wasn't in yet). Eventually got there at something like 11am.

The message hadn't been passed on and as there were a lot of people starting that day, they hadn't even noticed I was missing!

I was later complimented on appearing so cool and calm as I arrived....I didn't feel it.

I turned up a week "late" for a new job after a miscommunication by the HR department (they had told the office manager one starting date and me a different date). The funny thing was that no-one in the office mentioned it and I didn't find out until weeks later when my first paycheque arrived. I worked there for seven years.

Ob top of Eid the cricket is on at Edgbaston and the Five ways tunnels closed yesterday ( for 2 years!!) so people are getting around stuck there too.

I bet you weren't the only one caught out this morning

Agree its worth taking the train

I know stealth. He put years on me that day. (And plenty since then too!)

First day went really well! My new office is lovely and the work looks exciting Grin luckily the traffic closer to the city centre was much better and I was in work by 9.15 so not crazily late.

Thanks for the train advice! Good to know it’s a reliable line. Typically on the way home the bus has only taken 30 minutes Hmm there was a good 20 minute wait for one though so again train would probably be better.

Loved hearing everyone everyone’s first day stories!
