To go away over Xmas?

I'm a single mum of 7 year old twins. Family mostly local - two married brothers and both parents.
I am considering 'disappearing' for Xmas this year as I want a break from the family. I hosted Xmas 2018 as well as Easter so feel like I've done my bit.
AIBU to go away and take my kids with me? Any suggestions on destinations that won't break the bank?

@Lulumush I was a bit worried when I read the trip advisor reviews but honestly our stay was absolutely brilliant and I really don’t understand why it’s got so many bad Reviews. I’d 100% recommend it 😊

Not unreasonable, but whenever I've looked into doing this, the prices charged over Christmas are so extortionate that I've never actually done it. If you can afford it, go for it!

The canaries are expensive at Christmas because of the guaranteed weather. I'm going this Xmas, can't wait, tapas instead of turkey!

Mari50 · 04/06/2019 20:43

Contrary to what a pp said I don’t think anywhere is cheap/inexpensive at Christmas.
I’ve been to Australia several times and you have to time buying flights very carefully (unless money is no object)
Canaries is also expensive- I’ve been looking, double the usual summer price. Mexico/Caribbean same, as is Dubai......
YANBU wanting to go away but watch your budget. And you definitely aren’t guaranteed snow in the Cairngorms at Christmas......

We're off to Thailand this Christmas!

And if it did snow in the Cairngorms at Christmas it could really bugger up any plans, because you might not get there, or you might get stuck there, or supplies might run short, although you'd hope they can cope with it up there better than most of the country.

But there was that woman who lived in a lighthouse on the northern coast who went out to get her Turkey in the run up to Christmas and couldn't get home for nearly a month.

We went to Disney last Xmas and had a fantastic time. Xmas Day was very odd to us as we didn't feel even remotely xmassy but had a great day anyway. Both our children though have asked for a "normal" Xmas this year.

We have also done Center Parcs at Xmas, and that was a great balance doing something different yet keeping it traditional

Just wanted to say thanks so much for all the ideas. Aviemore top is the list. Just need to break the news to my mum before I book. 🙀
