My castrated, diabetic male cat got taken by a stranger to be castrated, he’s very unwell

Hi, please be gentle with me I’m very upset. I have a five year old male cat that got recently diagnosed as having diabetes. We have been keeping him in the house to monitor his diet. Yesterday lunchtime, he managed to squeeze past a delivery driver. We searched all yesterday and this morning for him. While putting out the washing, I heard a lady going round shouting, foes anybody have a black cat. I said yes, thinking oh my god, he’s dead. She declared your cats at the local vets for pets been castrated. Apparently she thinks my 5 year old largish castrated male, was her 6 month old kitten, how I have no idea! They got as far as the anesthesia until they realized it was not the kitten but my male cat and then checked the microchips. The vet has said they take full responsibility for not checking, she can’t understand how the women thinks my fully grown cat is her kitten. I’m still very upset. The fact he was taken there, knocked out and his sugar levels dipped that low I watched him faint on the table. The vets done full blood work on him and said other than his glucose he’s fine. He’s home but is refusing to eat, I’m having to syringe feed him. I know unlikely but has anyone else experienced anything so insane? I still can’t believe the entire situation. He’s due back at the vets in the morning x pic of him in his -what have you done to my ears moment

Oh your poor cat. How’s he feeling now? I used to live in Kent and my NDN went on holiday to Devon and came back with a cat. Apparently it was a starving stray that kept crying for food outside their holiday home so they took him home! I immediately went online to the local FB page for the town they stayed in and there was a message about a missing cat with a photo of NDN’s new cat. They were furious with me when I showed them and apparently contacted the person but she didn’t want her cat back. I always wondered whether they just didn’t contact her.

RJnomore1 · 03/06/2019 20:43

You’d think with his distinctive taste in earwear they’d have realised more quickly.

On a serious note how did they miss that HE HAD NO BALLS??

Poor lamb

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 03/06/2019 20:43

Pretty dodgy vets that didn't do a quick check over of an animal before starting anathesia I would have thought? Even a quick check would have shown he was already done. And how can they blame the woman if they didn't spot he was a kitten either for goodness sake?

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 03/06/2019 20:45

Brainscience didn't you contact the original owner yourself? I wouldn't trust anyone who nicked a cat to play fair!

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 03/06/2019 20:45

People are truly mad! I'm glad your lovely boy is home (and has some lovely ear clips Grin).
We had a battle with our neighbours a couple of years ago when we still had our old girl and she liked to sunbathe outside ours on a verge between the houses. Despite having lived there for four years and knowing all the neighbours they put a post out on our village Facebook saying they were taking her to the vets if they could catch her and no messages from me would persuade them otherwise!
Thankfully they didn't catch her as she would have shredded them but it led to a month of people feeding her and leaving blankets out for her, despite her coming in at night, and in the end it took DH going to their doors to tell them to leave her alone.
I think people do struggle with the idea that cats sitting about outside are perfectly happy and more than likely have somewhere to go.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 03/06/2019 20:46

I think the mad lady and the vet are both to blame in this situation. I’d be steaming. Is this your vet or a different one.

I’d take DCat to your vet get full tests and charge the vet/mad lady for any damages to your DCat.

Love the curtain rings, IMO cats love wearing things balanced on their ears, so cute.

StrongTea · 03/06/2019 20:48

Hope he is okay. I have a diabetic dog and know what a worry it is.

qazxc · 03/06/2019 20:50

how the hell did she mistake her cat for yours?
How the hell did the vets not notice the cat was already neutered and presumably not the age described?
Glad that he is back home and safe.
I do catch/neuter/release on strays for a local animal charity, it's quite possible that we have neutered a few pets as well (but then again expensive pedigrees would have chips with details on which is the first thing we/ the vet checks).

EAIOU · 03/06/2019 20:51

@VladmirsPoutine- I read that thread also about a cat found there and searched on Facebook for the owner and they wanted to keep it and get him neutered.

Singleandproud · 03/06/2019 20:51

Have you got any tuna in spring water, I know people food isnt great but he might drink it, only if his diabetes allows of course.

My parents cat gets a flea allergy in the winter so was looking a bit worse for wear, she was being treated but escaped as loves being outside and would normally only come in for food, often choosing to sleep in the shed where she has a bed. Next door but ones adult DD was visiting for a week and kept feeding her so she didnt come home and then took her to the RSPCA because she didnt look well!
If she hadn't fed her she would have come home and could have continued her treatment. Its only because her pic came up on the local RSPCA facebook page that we found her.

OldUnit · 03/06/2019 20:52

Poor cat! Poor you! I'd be gutted! Thanks

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 03/06/2019 20:52

Wha??

I’ll have to try that with my neighbours nice car.

“Oh sorry I thought it was mine, it has wheels and is car shaped”

BrainScience · 03/06/2019 20:52

greig no I didn’t as I genuinely thought NDN’s had done it out of (slightly insane) kindness. I do wish I’d contacted her after I’d seen their reaction when I told them though!

Cupcakey · 03/06/2019 20:54

What area are you only I've had not exactly the same but similar with my cat and the lady had form for it I found out since!. I just wondered if it could possibly be the same women!! I'm in the Greater Manchester area.

TheDarkPassenger · 03/06/2019 20:55

People are dead weird. My small cat kept being brought back by people saying ‘your kitten has escaped’ she’s not a kitten! Same as I’m 5’2 but not a child! Ffs.

youkiddingme · 03/06/2019 20:55

I don't get why the lady would be declaring "your cats at the local vets for pets been castrated" if she thought it was hers, and if she had realised it was actually yours why hadn't she gone back to stop it? And why would she be going around shouting about it? Very strange.

EAIOU · 03/06/2019 20:55

This was the other thread!

Hope you're ok OP!

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/06/2019 20:55

Have you got legal cover with either your pet or household insurance? If you have it might be worth a call...

BillThePony · 03/06/2019 20:58

Poor kitty.

My local fb pages are full of posts with pictures of cats with people saying lost cat found is it your or found this cat he was starving am keeping in the house until he is claimed.

My cat would act starving 2 mins after being feed because he was a greedy sod so often ended up being declared a stray.

Xxalisoncxx · 03/06/2019 21:00

I’m in Stoke On Trent. She was shouting did anybody have a black cat. She had knocked on quite a few doors too ask. She told me when I said that I have two black cats, the cat mentioned and my female black cat.

The vets isn’t my usual vets, no. He was meant to be going to see our regular vet on Wednesday of this week. I’ve never dealt with diabetes before so it’s still new too me.

Cupcakey · 03/06/2019 21:05

not the same area so there's more than mad women about then !!!
Having been through similar I know how you feel I was so angry and upset.
I hope your kitty is ok. x

littlemeitslyn · 03/06/2019 21:07

Oh what a beautiful cat

Crazybunnylady123 · 03/06/2019 21:07

Poor you. I would seriously look in to compensation for this.
It’s horrendous I can’t imagine how I’d feel if someone did that to my cat.
I hope he’s feeling better. My parents had a diabetic cat before I was born. They said it was hard work and horrendously expensive back then. Thinking of u and poor cat.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 03/06/2019 21:09

My cat had diabetes. It’s quite a lot of monitoring involved. Blood tests are very expensive. It’s cheaper to buy a glucose monitor and do the curves at home, and ring the results in to the vets. Injections aren’t too hard, but getting the doses right can be. You have to increase by tiny amounts. Your vet will guide you.

Have you told your vet what has happened to your DCat? I think if not, you should call and ask for advice.
