to think that drinks in supermarkets should not come with straws

Does anybody actually use those little straws stuck on the side of instant coffee cartons and so on?

I rarely buy the drinks but see many people with them, it's such a waste of plastic.

I assume they are used to drink the drink?

Most people use them to drink the drink. You can buy cold coffees without the straw in most supermarkets, however I don't think it makes much difference since they're usually in a plastic or tetrapak cup anyway.

We really need to rethink the whole drinks market. Superfluous straws, tetrapaks, plastic bottles etc etc. We need to massively cut down on single use everything.

Get rid of anything hard to recycle and/or introduce a compulsory deposit refund scheme, with reverse vending machines in supermarktes and other public places. Will more or less solve the recycling problem and massively cut down on litter.

Also, in Asda this morning I saw water in a hybrid paper/starch container, that said it was totally recycleable and seemed like a good idea.

Yep, I do, my disabled mother does - she can’t use paper, glass etc straws. She uses plastic or bio degradable ones.
