To buy a diesel car ?

Ok hit me with it.

We need a car. Need a 7 seater and one with a big enough boot for UK holidays and buggy with all seats down.

We will be in the ULEZ in a few years so needs to be compliant (so will be Euro 6/ post 2017 compliant).

I assumed we would buy petrol but the vast majority of 7 seaters on the market (second hand) are diseased. Those that aren't are either way over budget or have tiny boot space.

We've looked at Petrol VW Sharans and Ford S Max's, but basically we can get a much better spec (including in safety features) and newer diesel car for less than the cost.

DH thinks the new diesels are just as clean. I still feel torn environmentally. I also think resell value will be less (but this isn't something we are concerned about as car will pay for itself) and cost of parking for diesel cars is higher in some boroughs.

So hit me with your thoughts/ suggestions ?

Some tosh on here re diesels.

We’ve just bought a diesel VW Sharan and would fo it again in a heart beat. Do not buy a petrol Sharan they’re no cleaner. Our Sharan has adblue and is in the cleanest Euro category, really cheap to run. Only electric cars are in a higher category.Dp an engineer as is df who bought the same after loads of research. Ours runs like a dream but you can clear the filter thing by giving it a run on the motorway if issues. It has a capability to switch off in traffic and is cleaner than most cars on the road.We tend to use the Sharan for longer journeys. Ironically the tiny vw we drive in the city is petrol and dirtier.

When they do an electric 7 sestet we can afford we’ll switch.

Watching this thread with interest, I’m about to buy a new big car & am debating the same.

Difference with me is that it will be brand new & on a lease so a lot of the cons don’t have the same impact.
