logo on school uniform

DC go to a school which insists on having their logo on the polo shirts that are the main uniform top. These cost £15 each (from only one outlet) as opposed to Asda ones which are £1.25 and which wash a lot better and which apart from the logo are identical . We bought the logo ones at the beginning of the year and each time they are washed more dye comes out - they now look as if they are years old and are more pink than red. AIBU to reuse to pay so much more for an inferior product? Can the (state) school legally insist on me doing so? Has anyone else had this issue?

I don’t think they can, no.
My ds’s school does do logo shirts but no one has them. We do get the logo jumpers, but they aren’t compulsory either and some wear plain.

GeilistheWitch · 03/06/2019 11:21

Not sure what the legalities are but in your situation I would be buying the Asda ones and cutting the logo off the destroyed shirts in order to stitch it onto the Asda ones.
When I was at school I know we had a girl transfer from somewhere else who did this with her blazer: stitched our school logo over her previous school's.

However, if everyone has noticed a problem with the colour-fastness and quality of the uniform shirts it should be possible to hold negociations with the school in a non confrontational way to try to improve the situation for September. Have you spoken to other parents about the problem?

Our school accept the unbranded / logo variants as long as they are the same uniform colours. I don't think they can enforce the logo.

herculepoirot2 · 03/06/2019 16:00

I think they can. Schools can set the uniform for the school.

HolesinTheSoles · 03/06/2019 16:02

I think they can. Schools can set the uniform for the school.

They can enforce a uniform policy but I thought they couldn't insist on a single supplier.

herculepoirot2 · 03/06/2019 16:03

That’s different, isn’t it? I think they might be fault only making it available through one supplier. But if they sell it at school - some do - they might get round that in that way.

MyDcAreMarvel · 03/06/2019 16:06

Primary schools can’t insist on uniform only secondary.

sheshootssheimplores · 03/06/2019 16:10

I plan on doing similar with my sons logoed PE t-shirt. I’m going to turn it into a patch and just use the patch on plain red t-shirts as he grows.

I had no idea. In that case, OP, go right ahead. Check first?

No idea but feel your pain. I have three DC so spent £90 on school jumpers/cardigans in September (two each). They all lost one of those so needed replacing and they look faded and shitty. I really don’t plan on buying new ones for this September since they all still fit.

Their old school didn’t insist on logos so I used to buy nice enough ones from Aldi or Sainsbury’s. I don’t understand why a primary school needs logo jumpers.

Pinkvoid · 03/06/2019 16:37

Also didn’t mind them losing or ruining one of the none logo ones as much because they were a third of the price but when it’s a logo one it’s really irritating.

Seniorschoolmum · 03/06/2019 16:40

You could ask the school for the .jpg file of the logo, and take it, and your chosen sweaters to an embroidery company.
Items usually cost about £5 each to embroider but at least you can choose better quality sweaters.

simplekindoflife · 03/06/2019 18:37

Cut the logos out and stick them to the ASDA tops!

Divebar · 03/06/2019 18:51

Oh my DDs school has everything with a logo including polo shirts, cardigans & jumpers, PE T shirts , PE fleece and joggers, baseball cap and school bag. They tolerated plain polo shirts when she was in reception because they were in the process of adopting a new policy but now children are disciplined for incorrect uniform ( notes sent home etc). Even for sock colour ( girls white socks, grey tights, boys grey socks) or the colour of hair clips. Sadly the polo shirts are a bitch to get stains out of. You save a little money buying the rest of the uniform second hand through the school but there’s no way you can buy the polo shirts which are white. I feel your pain. ( if you have a DD buy pinafores and no one will know)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/06/2019 18:53

I would definitely be appliqueing the logo from the old shirts onto new ASDA ones.

mazv1953 · 04/06/2019 09:34

Thanks for all that - some really useful advice. One DC is a girl so the pinafore idea is fantastic. I'll also have a go at cutting out the logo - one of the shirts is so dire that DS can't wear it anyway. Will also speak to the school about the details on the logo. If all else fails I'll try to engage the other parents/carers - I've already spoken to the school. The issue is mostly with the red shirts - the other colours don't wash so badly. Thanks again everyone
