To ask if anyone knows the Eden valley in Cumbria?

We are thinking of relocating from the home counties for more peace and quiet and have seen a house in the Eden valley.
Love the idea of quiet, less traffic, stunning countryside, less frantic people etc....but bit concerned about the climate, is it noticeably wetter and colder ?

I live in Cumbria and it's been tipping it down all week! Currently blowing a gale outside, actually.

But I actually don't mind. You get used to the weather. I'm so much happier here than I ever was living down south!

Preggosaurus9 · 02/06/2019 22:21

Of course it is, what a daft question. Cumbria is the wettest county! Summer (can wear shorts and a vest without a cardigan) lasts about a week.

If the weather is your main concern you need to stay dahrn Sarf. Maybe Cornwall even!

Dragongirl10 · 02/06/2019 22:21

Thanks for that, what do you like compared to living in the South?

My quality of life is much better - I earn less but my mortgage is half my rent down south for a house with a garden vs. a flat, so I actually have more money to play with.

I live just outside the national park so house prices are cheap. I'm five minutes from several beaches too. I have to drive a fair bit but I have to say it doesn't bother me all that much - you just get used to it, plus the views on my commute are amazing!

I think it's all personal though. I know lots of people who would hate living rurally - I'm often held up by herds of cows, sheep on the road and tractors on my commute to work! Plus tourists - so many tourists!

It won't be as wet as the Lake District. Most of the rain will have fallen on the high hills of the Lake District before it gets to you.

That side of the country is warmer than the NE.

And it's got red squirrels.

Dragongirl10 · 02/06/2019 22:40

The squirrels are really appealing...l only have the thuggish grey ones here.....

I know it well. It's cold, wet, windy..... and I'm a northerner anyway. But the countryside is glorious.

Very small towns, with corresponding attitudes in some places.

But it's beautiful.

UbercornsGoggles · 02/06/2019 22:51

I've lived in the Eden valley. It's beautiful and the people are lovely, but it can be wet. Slightly drier than the lake District but that's relative.

You might want to consider the Tyne valley. It's east of the Pennines so on the whole it's drier. Just as gorgeous and if anything the people are friendlier, and it's cheaper. It still has a northern climate so winters can feel long. But it's within easy reach of Newcastle both by road and train so also has the advantages of being near a major city if that's important to you.

UBERCORNS..thanks l will check it out..

Hmm, well it's the only place in the country with its own named wind - the Helm Wind, so yes weather can be an issue. Definitely some of the fellside villages don't see much sunshine and the heat wave of the last week has not happened. Whereabouts is it? I know the area and can tell you a bit if you like.

Dragongirl10 · 03/06/2019 12:48

Close to Cliburn, is where we have seen a property......

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/06/2019 12:51

Northumberland is pretty wonderful. Some wonderful peaceful areas, the best beaches in the world and not too far from a big city or two. East coast main line is useful too. Don't tell anyone.

Haisuli · 03/06/2019 14:31

Can't think of any weird weather phenomenons in Cliburn. It's handily near to Penrith for shopping and everything. There is nothing in the village itself - no pub, or shops, or school just a few houses and the back of Whinfell Forest (where Center Parcs is). Very near an ice-cream farm though :-) Eden's lovely, there are much worse places you could consider..

TheCumbrian · 03/06/2019 14:42

less frantic people I've seen some pretty frantic farmers in that area Grin if you visit over the next few weeks in good weather you will probably come across them on the roads with their big silage trailers.

The Eden Valley is lovely, yes it can be a bit wetter than down south but you get used to it (I assume, I've lived here all my life and haven't got trench foot yet).

Plus MN 's favourite Tory Rory Stewart will be your MP...

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 03/06/2019 14:54

Yes - watch out for the Helm wind! It's not really any drier than the Lakes.

Good connections via M6 and A66. Cheaper than living in the national park.

I don't live there but my dad grew up there and has moved back so have spent a lot of time there.

Dragongirl10 · 03/06/2019 17:21

Thanks all, like the sound of an ice-cream farm.......Tractors are fine, l grew up on a Cornish farm,.

Cornwall is damp but mild , and I've been in the SE for years so have got used to little rain and fair amount of warm sunny days.....26 here today.

Its the landscape that is the huge draw and the lack of traffic, (outside the lakes) and smog .

I live in the next council area to Eden. Cumbria is so varied and the weather is not as bad as people make out. When it's good, it's glorious. It's not as cold as the NE or Scotland and a lot of it doesn't get as much snow. Last summer we had the same heatwave as everyone else. It's lovely and clean here and I like the fact that there's relatively few people. Seeing the sun come up over the Lakes and Morecambe Bay on my commute is absolutely priceless. Better than plodding along motorways like I used to.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 03/06/2019 17:38

Part of the Eden Valley flooded quite badly in 2015 (Storm Desmond) there was some mighty snow drifts winter 2017-18.

VictoriaBun · 03/06/2019 17:54

You are fairly close to the A66 there so easy access to Scotch corner and the A1. Your nearest bigger town is Penrith, which will take you being able to get on the M6 North (Scotland) or South ( everywhere 😀 )
The Eden valley is a nice area, easy access to the lakes and the pennines just behind you ! I was in Penrith today as it's one of the town's I get my shopping from. Large Sainsbury's,a reasonable Morrisons, Booths and a small M &S good hall.

Haisuli · 03/06/2019 19:17

I actually think one of the downsides to Cliburn could be the traffic. It's not heavy by any means but it is a fast road through. Is there anything nice in Morland? That would score higher for me in the village stakes? I also like Lazonby, on the other side, it is a bigger village but attractive with lots of amenities including an open air pool and railway station.
